I need information on having a mold made for a design I have made. I need
it to be very detailed and have no idea where to start. I would like it
made so I can pour the design in porcelain. I have had a set of molds made
and had someone in the doll industry to pour the mold in porcelain for me.
It was unstasifactory....,basically the mold and not so much the pouring,
not enough detail and too thick. It is obvious I need to get to someone
who can understand the type of product line I am interested in. (I can show
some product that is similar in texture, thickness and detail) Any
ideas???

Glenda---Molds can pick up minute detail. It depends on how the plaster
is mixed and what kind of plaster you use. When I took a class in
mold-making, I did a 5 part mold of a Savoy Cabbage. Every squiggle and
vein in every leaf came out perfectly. Thickness of the cast depends on
several things also--like the amount of time the slip is left in the mold, the
experience of the person doing the casting and the type of slip--which,
by the way, comes in porcelain and in a variety of colors---how dry the
mold is, etc, etc.
If I remember correctly, Jonathan Kaplan on this list does molds for
clients. He'll probably answer your post, too.
