porcelain paper clay

Hi Clayarters
Happy to see a thread on paper clay. I have just finished making some wall
pieces using a Seattle paper clay but found it had too much grog for what I
wanted. I was very pleased with the reduced weight . I would like to experiment
using the Seattle Turner porcelain body I always use but thought I'd pass it by
all or you before I do. My plan for a small amount to start, is to soak white
toilet paper in water, whirl in a blender to make a paper mash, then mix with
thick porcelain slip from my re-claim bucket. I thought I'd start with one part
paper mash to two parts porcelain slip (and a bit of bleach to cut the mould.)
Is that too much paper? -not enough paper? I've heard that egg cartons are also
good to use. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks . Joan

Joan,

Will you be wedging the paper in by hand, mixing it into the
liquid slip before you dry it enough for re-working, or what?
If you are using a clay mixer, there are few difficulties -
you can just add any shredded paper right into the mixer as
the clay is mixing, and it will disintegrate the paper, mix it
in for you. You can use any paper. Inexpensive ones such as
shredded computer paper, are easier to break down. The amount
of paper needed depends a little on what you are going to use
it for, but there is a lot of latitude here. If you are adding
blender-ed pulp to slip, there is a lot of water involved, you
might want to try a one-one ratio, two-one, one-two, etc. Just
try small amounts first, see what works best for you. I have
found paper porcelain mixtures pretty forgiving. And, in
general, the paper does not have to be white.
