I am a new Clayart reader and I'm on my way to Japan in May. I will be in
Tokyo and Kyoto (Nara). Could anyone give me advice on visiting potteries in
these general vacinities? I am going to the studio to mix Pike's Oatmeal
purple!

Dear Louise:
The major department stores in these cities usually have galleries with
pottery being exhibited and for sale. You wil find pottery shops all over the
place. The town of Mashiko is only about an hour or so outside of Tokyos. You
can visit Shoji Hamadas pottery as well as others in the area. It is highly
recommended. In the city of Tokyo is a very large craft department store
which is a real treat. You can buy those wonderful Japanese throwing sticks
there as well as some of the real pure cobalt oxide mixes and probably a few
pounds of Shigaraki clay if you want. This place is a huge department store
which sells wood tools, bamboo, weaving, pottery etc. etc. Try to take in a
Kabuki play while you are there. They supply tape recorders with English
translations if you want to understand what you are watching.
Kyoto is a beautiful walking city and a must see there is the house, pottery
of the later Kanjiro Kawai. You can probably also call the university and
check out their ceramic department. I remember seeing a lot of pottery stores
around the temple areas. Just ask people at the hotels. They can probably
point you in the right direction.
If you like you can EMail me and I can give you the number of my friend
Masako who has taken many tour groups to Japan. She could give you a lot of
tips on places to go and things to see. She owns the Garendo Gallery in
Studio City California and is a potter herself.
Regards,
June Perry
