I will be leaving Denver June 2nd for a two week vacation starting in
Juneau Alaska, then traveling by ferry down the inner passage,
stopping in Ketchikan, Sitka, and ending up in Bellingham Washington
where we plan to spend a couple of days in the San Juan Islands.
I would greatly appreciate any input about things I shouldn`t miss
while on this trip. I am particularly interested in Raku, and local
clay artists as well as hiking, whale watching, halibut fishing, bird
watching, etc.

don't miss Wrangel Alaska. the last home of Chief Shakes. He was
tha guy who gave the last Potlatch in about 1927 or so. They're
still talking; what a party...

it sounds like you won't get that far north but Haines and Port
Chilkot are also wonderful places to look at Northwest Coast art.

I'm sure it has changed since I was last there but it will still be
wonderful.
Read Franz Boaz (or maybe it's Boas) before you go.

I live south of Bellingham, I am a ceramicists, and I hike and write, and
watch whales. You will be here in time to go to The San Juans and see the
orcas. The grays are just about finished passing through now. I went out on a
tour last year to see the Orcas, and I highly recommend you do the same. we
have a whale watch number, but I'd have to look it up, and I doubt there
would be too much info about the Orcas just yet, But I'd gladly access the
info for you if you like. Hiking is great. Are you going to stay on the
Cascade side, or go to the Olympics? Mount Baker will be lovely, flowers
and snow, and probably sunshine. Are you a moderate hiker, or do you have
kids? There are so many places, but many will be snowed under still then,
like chain Lakes, one of my favorites. stay in touch
