Dear Nikki,
There is a lot of pottery for sale from all over Mexico in Cancun but
I've never seen a potter making it there. I've been going to the
Yucatan every Nov for 18 years and the only pottery town I've found in
the Yucatan is Ticul which is 85 km out of Merida ( an hour and half by
car) There is a ceramic factory and several small studios making
wonderful mayan figures. There are for sale in the gift shop at the
hotel at Uxmal. I'm in love with this part of Mexico so if you want more
info contact me directly.

Hello all,

We're planning on going to Cancun, Mexico the second week in
September. Does
anyone know of any local potters/sites/galleries we could
visit?

Thanks much

JB

Hi John!

I made the same trip in February and was greatly disappointed. Had no
luck in finding any galleries (worth mentioning) or potters. The area is
extremely over developed and very tourist oriented. Malls! Malls!
Malls! Beware of the taxi fares.

Enjoy! but be VERY careful of the food and water!

A side trip to Chitchen Itza (?spelling?) made it all worth while. Have
plenty of film - the ruins (their details) are breath taking! Great
ideas for pot decoration!

Have fun!!

Hello John,

This was discussed a little while ago and may be in the archives. Old
Cancun City has a lot of tourist type pottery stands with a modest
selection. Cancun is the center of Hammocks making and there are a
zillion of the saleman around the Yucatan area. There is a nice folk art
museum in Merida, the Capital of Yucatan. We found some decent ceramica
there, but not a lot.
Sites to include are Tulum, Chichen Itza and many others a good guide
book will suggest. By all means take the buses to enjoy the full
experience of Mexico.
Hope this helps.

There is a little fishing village not to far south of Cancun called Porta
Moralas, this is where we stayed when we went (not sure of the spelling, but
go south a little way down the coast and you should see it.) When we were
there a few years back there was a potter living on the edge of this
village. His business looked a bit shaky, so I don't know if he is still
there, but if he is, it would be worth the visit. If he is not there the
village is a nice place to visit.

Recommendations:
Don't hang around Cancun!!

See Chitzaniza (spelling?) about 2 hours west of Cancun. It is the most
restored ruins around that area and is really amazing place. Make sure you
see the Observatory, the Ball Court and the Nunnery!!

There is a really great ruin called Coba, it is southwest way out in the
jungle. It is very big with many pyramids still covered by the jungle (I
counted at least 8 around the 'big lake') and it's not very crowded. Also
go to Talume (spelling??) it's a fabulous ruin right on the coast, south of
Porta Moralas.

You can rent a taxi driver for the whole day to drive you to these places or
ride the buses (this is an experience if you want to immerse yourself in the
culture, but don't believe the published schedules).

Try to speak the language (the locals will treat you better), don't eat the
ice-cream (even though it was very good), I did and regretted it, and only
drink bottled water.

Have fun. It is one of the most memorable places I have been.

Les
