I am teaching a workshop in Spain in the potters village of Agost, 18 km
north of Alicante on the Mediterranean. I spent a year researching folk
potters of Spain (Fulbright Research Grant) and visited many rural areas
using the "Rutas de Alfareros Espana y Portugal" by Emili Sempere. If
you start in Madrid, go to the Casa de Libros, best book store in Spain.
In the Anthropology section, you can probably find it.
Many of the potters were dying out because of the membership into the
Common Market in 1986. The traditional female potters of Moveros (near
Zamora, northe of Salamanca) used the ancient "celtic wheels" and
celtic kilns. I have written/published several papers for the Am.
Anthrop. Assoc. on the subject of Spansh potters. If you have access
to a good research library, you should be able to find lots of info.
Claudia Reese wrote a piece for CM in the early '80's on the Women
Potters in Spain.(there were very few and very low tech).
Contact me for further info.

Seth Cardew (Michael Cardew's son) works there. Anyone wanting to
contact him could probably do it via Simon Leach (on youtube - they are
pretty good friends) - both of them are very approachable and helpful to
pottery folk!

A friend of mine is going to Spain soon. Does anyone on the list know
any potter there? It would be helpful, but not essential, if they
spoke English.
Thanks,

Seth Cardew, son of Michael Cardew lives in Spain, runs a pottery and
pottery school and also has accomodation in a very nice old and picturesqu=
e
house next to the pottery where you can rent rooms etc. A friend went ther=
e
last year for one or two nights and ended up spending most of her stay
there. He is just down the road from Simon Leach. You can google up Seth
Cardew Spain. He does, of course, speak perfect English! He lives inland
from Barcelona, you can see it all on his website. My friend found it a
very special experience.

Dear Paul Lewing,
Seth Cardew would be one person to consider. I think he has a web site.
Check recent CM Small adds.

There are Spanish potters working in Agost. There were 21 potteries when =
=3D
I lived there in 1985-86. I also visited 48 pottery centers throughout =3D
the country. Many are gone now. The Spanish entry into the European =3D
commmunity was tough on traditional potters.
However, some managed to adapt.=3D20
In Agost, there is a center where studio potters work and a =3D
potterymuseum. There are still five very active potteries with the big 3 =
=3D
and 4 story kilns.
At least they were still there a few years ago. I know the Centro Agost =3D
and museum are still there.=3D20
This is 18 km into the hills above Alicante.
There are great museum collections Barcelona (NE Coast) , Valencia (East =
=3D
Coast) , Madrid (central) , Ubeda (South but not coast) ,
Pontevedra (nw near coast)=3D20
There are several potters in Ubeda as well. Casa de Tito is a potters =3D
collection that includes a ceramic Roman Bathtub as well as many tinaja =3D
stoage containers and nice pots.=3D20
The word for pottery in Spanish is "Alfarera".=3D20
There is also Arcadi Vlasco who does large sculptural installation =3D
pieces with various natural colored stoneware in wood firing. His studio =
=3D
was north of Alicante. Several of his installations are along the coast =3D
north of Alicante. Very impressive work.

Simon Leach was up the road up from Seth until 6 months ago or so - I =3D
took a workshop at his place in Spain in September. Simon is now in New =3D
York state.

Simon Leach seems to have moved to New York, he works and gives lessons in
his studio in Barryville now.
