Mark,
At the moment, in upstate NY, I am paying about .$80 per gallon. I say
at the moment, because I have a rate which is dependent upon the price at
the refinery. I pay $.33 above the rate at some point in Texas (Port
Hilton?) which is the departure point to up north, I think. I was paying
rates similar to yours and finally started calling around. When I got
one company to give me a bid way lower, I called the old company and told
them to pull my tanks (2 1000 gallon tanks). They got a bit upset and
wondered why, I told them they'd been taking advantage of my naivete in
regards to propane prices, and I'd gotten a far better deal, so there.
What was the other company's bid, they inquired, saying they would beat
it. No way, I replied, they gave it to me in good faith and if you want
to give me a competitive bid, fine, but I'm not going to put them at a
disadvantage. Well, they came in with their proposal which beat the
other company's. My rate still fluctuates, having gone from around $.59
to .95 per gallon over the years, based upon supply and demand, the
orientation of the planets, whether the Gas King needs a new mansion, etc
(I really can't figure out the reasons why). But I did save about
$1500.00 the first year with the "New Deal".
Perhaps you should start to call around. BTW, it also helps when you can
call and tell them what amount you will be using, and helps further when
that amount is in the multiple thousands of gallons.
Good luck,

In March we paid .895/gallon
In July we paid .875/gallon (2 cents less/gallon)
Today it's back up to .895/gallon.
We're at Glacier, Washington, 2 hrs north of Seattle. We have use a 500
gallon tank and therefore qualify for "volume prices," which probably makes
a big difference. Another factor in our favor is having four oil
refineries within a 90-minute drive -- fuel transpiration costs are lower
here, maybe.

Hi Mark.....
Commodity prices fluxuate daily. If bought by the tanker-load, the current
price, FOB Selkirk, N.Y. pipeline terminal, (from Texas) near Albany,
New York is about $0.54 per gallon, today... plus about $.03/gallon for
transportation to Bennington from Selkirk ( about 60 miles away) (Just
got a quote from Global Gas, a few minutes ago). BTW... HD-5 grade of
propane is common here.
If you had an 18,000 gallon tank (purchase 'used' at about $20 grand) and
a vaporizor (also costly) and needed that much gas in a reasonable amount
of time...it might work. Tankers carry 9,200 gallons typically.
More realistically....a 'group purchase' might work. 20 potters get
together and 'shop' for the vendor that will give you a 10 or 15% discount
on propane. BUT, watch for Complications with issues like "who owns the
tank?" Most companies "loan" you the tank..you pay for its' use with every
gallon you pay $1.35 for...of course. Small deliveries of 100-200 gallons
cost those gas companies a lot in driver time....so you pay more there too.
If you had a co-op that could buy in bulk and have a tanker deliver to 3 or
4 spots...into 5,000 gallon tanks...you could save money.
Since reagan and deregulation of prices...was it 15 years ago already?? the
market is open to people making deals...might be worth exploring...if you
have some purchasing power...power in numbers.
Just some thoughts ..
what a gas.

Just thought I'd throw my two cents worth in.
In preparations for building a kiln I checked around and found that prices
varied quite a bit. The best price I found was for (for a 200 gal tank, I
think it was) $30.00 a year lease on the tank and $.75 a gal. for propane.
I was also told (as, it seems, have most others) that the price could
fluctuate.

In uch of the area I am familliar with, Propane prices are fairly
competitive, and therefore vary with the season, and the amount of usage.
The tanks (the sizes that are semi-permantly in place) arte usually
"leased", and for a relatively small fee, considering the investment. The
lease agreement usually has an "exclusive" clause in it, that prohibits you
from getting gas from another dealer. In other word, the dealer is blocking
you from shopping around, by almost giving you the tank.
The "base" price locally seems to be about $1.00 a gallon. This is NOT the
average price, but a reference point to calculate from. If you have a very
regular account, and pay cash, it goes down as much as 20%. (ie, about
$0.80). This is what I pay in the winter, and early summer.
There is a peculiar factor that puts the possibility of another saving in
play in the summer, when the heating load is low. The local tank storage
system is finite, and the local dealer is often pressured to buy in the
summer ("top up his tanks") by the source, who has all his tanks full,
also. shutting a refinery down because there is no place to put the gas is
expensive- therefore, the people all down the line do what they can to get
gas in ALL storage, including the one outside your house. The end result is
that there may be "mid summer" specials.
A comment about the situation with regard to the "twenty pound bottle"
often used for BarBeQue grills and small Raku kilns. Most of the cost
(about $8-15 is common) is in the "service" part of the job. The gas is
about $3.00, the service charge is the rest. A part of this is fair,
because it does need special equipment, but much of it is just because
people dont question it.
BTW- any cooks out there- if you use electricity, instead of gas, for
cooking, you are missing something.

Mark,
Wow. You must have read my mind. Just the other day I was thinking (as
the tank was being filled (g) ) I ought to ask this question on the list
just to make sure that I was in the normal ballpark for the US and the
region. Propane just keeps going up and up on a steady slow climb.
I am now paying =241.31 gal. here in southern NH.
On the bigger scale of things, firing costs are pretty small relative to
the volume of wares in a kiln load. Wish I could get my time costs for
paperwork and accounting, correspondence, marketing, packing, materials
handling and so on down ......... that for me seems far, far more
expensive. The propane bill still looks large though when you pay it (g),
usually cause you don't pay by the firing, you pay for a whole bunch of
firings all at once. Easy to forget all those pots that you fired (g).
Those of us here in America on this list have a tendency to take low fuel
costs for granted and expect them to continue. Many other countries are
not so lucky. The US is just headed toward more equity in the cost of
fossil fuels.
I don't have to like it....... but that is the way it is, and probably as
it should be.

Dear friends,
I received a newsletter from my propane company containing a chart of =
price projections for propane over the next ten years. This chart shows =
a decrease in prices until 2003, then a slight increase for 2004-5, down =
again in 2006, up 2007, steady for 2008 and then a gradual increase =
2009-10. The good news is that the projected prices never reach the high =
level they did in 2001. The source of this information is the US Dept. =
of Energy.
How reliable are these projections? I don't have a clue. And what =
information are they based on? Beats me! Just thought this information =
might be interesting to some on the list.

Being right next door to California, what we end up paying for energy
here in Las Vegas is subject to some of the same cost problems that they
are experiencing. Our natural gas company just got approval to raise
gas prices 25% affective right away. They chose to do this in the
summer naturally when residential gas consumption is low, and will be
insignificant on current bills. This winter when the actual increase
begins to be reflected in our bills, the rate increase will have been
several months old and they hope forgotten.

Hmmmm, US Dept. of Energy projecting Propane prices dropping in 2002.
Can't imagine where they get that idea since all the propane companies out
here in the So. West are projecting steadilly increasing prices for at least
a year or more.
In any case; here in San Diego county all energy prices are going out the
roof.
Last week I called my propane distributor and discussed a yearly contract.
They actually had a plan being offered that did just that. Our currrent
propane costs have gone from $ 1.56 a gal. to over $ 2.00 a gal. in six
months. Their projected cost is for
over $ 2.25 by end of summer.
What sort of deal did I negotiate ? We wrote a contract for 1.5 times my
anual home average useage, 1800 gallons, at a prepaid price of $ 1.59 / gal.
starting in June.
Using the figures from standard btu charts [ propane at 2158 btu / gal. and
natural gas. 2488 / cu. ft ] and the current price of $ 1.90 / cu. ft. for
natural gas from SDG&E ( which they gaurentee will go up and up and up ) ; I
computed that the price is 1/10,000 of a cent difference between natural gas
and what I contracted for propane. Now ain't that interesting ?
So now I'm thinking of converting all of the Nottingham Center over to
propane as well. Heck, I haven't even begun to bargin on long term propane
contracts with the many competing local dealers.

the reason I had annually posted a request for prices from Clayart members
was that I had found that suppliers seemed free to charge anyone and
everyone whatever they saw fit or ''what the market could bear''.I felt if we could
compare prices it would give members a wakeup call and possibly a tool to use
to bargain for more fair rates.I had real price and suply problems when in
the late 1970's when we had the infamous gasoline and propane shortages when a
fellow potter not oly got a far better price thanImyself but I was denied a
supply all winter because I didn't also use it for my home and he used it to
fire from his household tank.Potters were considered nonessential industry that
winter, even though I had deliveries of clay from United Sierra Mines, direct,
as well as NC mines and KY/TN by the semi to the tune of full
transports.McClean TRUCKLINE SENT A VP TO MY DOOR TO THANK ME FOR MY BUSINESS BUT EXXON
refused to sell me propane that winter![I had to go get 100 pound bottles filled
,one at a time, at a local supplier at very high prices and tie them in
tandom to fire since my 500 gallon tanks couldn't get filled by truck
delivery.Since I was a ''bit of a gal'' working all on my own that was no small feat.We do
what we have to.
My point is we need to be vigilant on this pricing as we seem to have an
image with the supplier industry that makes us a special case and we need to work
that to our advantage rather than the reverse.

We topped off the farm tanks March 15 - $2.00 a gallon. It has not been
that long ago ( a couple of years at the longest) that I was griping about
propane topping $1.00! And that was before I had the gas kiln.. But, the
pots that come out of my gas fired MFT are worth every penny spent on the
propane. Plus, with my lack of grace and coordination, a chainsaw to cut
timber down on the river would naturally lead to excessive medical bills and
ambulance rides! So, propane is cheap at half the price when you look at
what I get, and what I save :-)

This thread just reminded me to get a refill. They quoted $2.759 here
in western MA. I have two 100gal tanks.

I am currently paying 2.649 per gallon for propane. I use the supplier's
budget plan that sets the price at a guaranteed rate for 12 months. The
price is usually lower than a monthly rate, but it irritates me that they
add a flat fee of 7.75 per month to use the budget plan. I have a rental
cottage and that rate in December when the tank was last filled was 3.229
per gallon. Then add on the fuel recovery fee (whatever that is) and hazmat
surcharge and you get pretty close to 3.40 per gallon. They get you coming
and going as far I can see.
