pugmil problem

I am having a problem with a nearly new Venco 31/2 " Mill. The slot from
the de-airing chamber to the mill rapidly fills with clay thereby
stopping the de-airing action. The clay is not real soft and per
instructions from my machine supplier I have tried opening the air valve
but I am still getting air in the clay. Any advice out there before I
tear into this thing and call Australia?
I am able to get 24 to 30 inch pug before the slot is full and that just
doesn't seem right. Thanks for any insight.

In reference to the vacuum slot clogging with clay on your Venco pugmill:
Ours is prone to the same behavior, but I never thought of it as much of a
problem. The rapid opening and re-closing of the vacuum release lever will
generally suck the clay back into the barrel, and if that fails, turning
the machine off and cleaning the slot with a stick only takes a few
seconds. The manufacturer suggests covering the top part of the screen
inside the barrel with plastic electrical tape to prevent this problem if
you are pugging very soft clay, or porcelain, which is more difficult to
deair.
