purple mason stains

Hi Laura: My experience with Mason Stains in slips has led me to believe
that the Chrome-Tin purples do not work in slips at any percentage and
especially at cone 10. Lavendar #6319 will work in slips up to cone 10 and
maybe beyond. 6319 is a manganese-alumina-cobalt based stain and has
different requirements than CrO2-SnO based stains to develop color. I think
the Cro2-SnO stains need to be in a lower Alumina environment than a slip
will allow, as well as to be in a glaze with adequate Calcium Oxide.
Calcium is very important for the development of chrome-tin pinks, reds, and
purples. My opinions are based on readings and experiences with these
colorants at cone 10 Ox. in slips and glazes.

I have been meaning to mention to y'all that awhile ago I begged Axner's to
get me 1/4lb of two purples they don't carry, #s 6318 and 6324 in the hope
that they could pry it out of Mason where I would have to buy 10lbs of each
from Mason direct. Well Axner's bought 10 lbs of each for little ol' me
and sold me my 1/4 lb, leaving them with 9-3/4lb of each in their little
ol' warehouse. So I am buying an extra lb of each in case I can never get
it again and that leaves 8-3/4 lb......anyway so anybody out there that
craves some purples nobody carries these two are available through Axner.

Usual disclaimers.....Eleanora

you have!

Hi Laura and all,

6318 is Amethyst (cr sn co al si zn)
6324 is Violet (zn cr sn co al ca si)

Neither of these is pictured so I can't describe them but I am taking for
example of those colors the amethyst and violet in the Velvet series. I
figured these two stains would probably be the truest to the colors in my
mind I call purple....as opposed to lavender or wine-type
colors.....actually I have most of the others already and though one of the
lavenders is pretty close none were as deep as I thought I would like....

Hope this is a help, sorry I don't have more information, I haven't had
time to test them and see. When I get home from Florida I will do that and
make a report.

Eleanora.......all the ice was north and east.....I am very grateful......
