I am interested in combining lustre raku glazes with white crackle glaze
on the same piece. I know this has been successfully done but I keep
being told the maturation temperatures of each are different so one or the
other glaze will be successful and the other won't. Can anyone tell me
how to combine the two glazes successfully? Thanks in advance. Jeni

>Hi I fire Crackle with copper matt quite often. You can go about it in a
few ways Here are some of mine. Adjust the crackle to melt at the temp you
fire your lustre to I fire mine to a bent over large 05 in about 25 mintutes
and use a crackle that is 50 nep syn. and 50 Ger. bor. Another way that I do
it is tape off the area that you want to glaze with crackle do the lustre
thing/fire it than glaze it in crackle and fire it again till the crackle
melts pull it and do your normal reduction dance. Really it works well
becuase you can use the crackle glaze as a firing guide. Need more help just
ask. Bruce J.

It depends what lustre glazes and what crackle, doesn't it?
One method for creating a kind of lustre on a crackle is to spray solubles
on the crackle in the post firing process. This is something pioneered by
Rick Hirsch. Iron Chloride(amber), silver something (yellow), copper
sulphate( green usually), and I think there's a cobalt soluble, or tin
chloride for irridescence, can be used, separately or in combination.
Spray when the piece is too hot and it burns off; spray when too cold
and it does not fuse; but if like Goldilocks, it's just right, it will put a sub
layer on top of the crackle.
