Is there anyone out there with plans for a Raku kiln with a counter
balance. We have presently have one at the moment , but I would like to see
any other ways of approaching making one.

You may be interested in my effort in developing a raku kiln. I ordered
two riser sleeves (ceramic fiber board cylinders) M-board specs. Each is
12" high with interior dimension of 20"--wall thickness is 1-1/2". These
are stacked so I have 24" height inside. I wrapped the stacked cylinders
with thin, expanded metal tightened with standard pipe clamps brazed on.
This is very light weight requiring no counterweight. One inch M-board
cut to fit for lid completes the kiln. Set on IFB foundation or hard bricks.
The whole inside is sprayed with ITC 100, fired--then sprayed with ITC
296A. Makes a very nice, portable kiln. I will be showing slides on this
and my experiments on C 10 reduction, salt/soda electric kiln firings at
NCECA. Riser sleeves are available from Fire Brick
Supply-1-800-444-3301--ask for Dona. ITC coatings can be purchased from
Axner. I think the riser sleeve wall thickness can be reduced to 1"
saving some cost there. Nils
