raku/pit fire using an electric kiln

A friend of mine, Jewell Brenneman, does raku using her electric kiln to
bring the pots up to temperature all the time. Her kiln is still in excellent
condition--she fires at least two to three times a week both raku and
oxidation. She uses a pyrometer to check when the kiln reaches the
correct temp to remove the raku pots (1800 F) and then uses
extroardinarily long tongs and much body protection to carry the pots to
waiting garbage cans filled with whatever---usually cardboard for her.

I've smoked unglazed bisque in these firings and found the results very
satisfactory.
