I believe your choice of wick is the problem. A cotton wick for candle
making will probably work. Best option is a fibreglass wick. I would also
suggest that you fire the bead to glaze temp, better yet, glaze the
surface. This will allow cleaning of any carbon deposits and stop the bead
from becoming saturated with oil. If it smokes, wick is too high or poor
quality oil is being used (avoid coloured oils) . Hope this is helpful. M.

Hi,
Yes, your message is very helpful. Thanks. I'll fire the bead to ^5
which is my glaze temperature. Also, I'll try a glazed bead and check
the wick. Fiberglass wick? I'll ask at the candle supply house. I am
using lamp oil, shouldn't that work? I'll try to get candle oil from
the candle supply house, too. Thanks for the note. June
