response from responses to used skutt kiln

I want to thank all of the posts for troubleshooting my used Skutt kiln. I
ended up checking the elements with an ohm meter to get resistance
readings. Then called Skutt directly. They were a GREAT help. The
support tech was busy when I called and had to leave a message and didn't
think I would here back any time soon. Within 15 minutes he returned the
call and walked me through all of the possible problems with not reaching
temp. (Bad elements, wiring gauge, breakers,...) Gave me all of the ohm
readings for each element and how to read the ohms from the plug to check
the switches as well. Now thats customer service! If anyone is interested
in the factory readings I can post them.
After testing my elements I learned that they were ALL BAD, worn out, one
was broke, others had a reading way off of what they gave me as normal. So
I replaced them all and am now able to reach ^6 in less than 8 hours. I
can really tell the difference visually. The kiln is practically new now,
besides some cracked bricks, so I am looking forward to many years of
service.
The Skutt rep told me the 231 model has not been produced for at least 17
years so that is a testament for the quality of a Skutt. Im sold!

Thanks again for all of the help

Hi Randy:

Just wait until you have to change the interbox connectors, a usual
maintenaince event for all Skutts. Except now there are no longer interbox
connectors. Skutt has an upgrade to re-wire all the boxes. Not too
difficult, but there are problems. Meantime enjoy. Emily
