A few years ago I heard about a workshop held in either Chaco Canyon
or in Mexico. In Chaco Canyon, you camped out in the canyon, dug your
own clay, made pots, and then pit fired them. The potter who told me
about this said it was a transforming experience for him. Have any of
you attended this workshop or know who sponsors it?
Thanks for your help---

Sandy,
Try Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts...P.O. Box 38, Idyllwild, CA

They offer sections in Native American Art, and used to have classes in
Chaco Canyon.

Sandy...
I have not attended this, but you might want to check it out:
Taos Art School
Box 2245
Ranchos de Taos, NM 87557
(505)758-0350
**of the many classes they offer, this one was of great interest to me:
Acoma Pueblo Pottery and Culture
July29-August 9 at Acoma Pueblo
**Mary Lewis Garcia (daughter of Lucy Lewis) teaches this course at the Acoma
Pueblo (where one can camp) and the group of 15 students will travel with
Mary to the Chaco clay pits to gather materials, then prepare the clay and
pigments, make the pots and fire at her studio**
(this is my shortened version of what is written in the brochure...)
-------------------------
There is a second "tour" which is Aug. 16-19, thought this is more of a
learning trip to Chaco with "faculty" who speak about the different Anasazi
arts, life, etc.; again this is my shortened version... the tour is called
"Chaco Canyon Tour"
Good Luck...
