Some thoughts...

1) Jack is right. Compression works, so myth or no myth, who cares?

2) Even if compression is a myth, so is Christianity, Buddhism, Animism and
on and on. Does this mean they should not be practiced because they are
mythologies?

3) Misinformation can be printed in any magazine. One should be careful
before referring to the source that brought us such gems as: place thumb
tacks in your pots from the inside so that you'll know when you've trimmed
enough because your tool will hit the points of the tacks; and place your
clay between two boards and place behind the wheel of your car and drive
over it for easy slab making.

4) The beginners on this list should be reminded that all of the
suggestions read on this list should be considered worth trying as you make
your own exploration through the study of artistic expression with clay. If
they work for you use them, and if they don't, let them go. That's what
the rest of us do.

(who remembers when there were only 200 of us on this list and we use to
talk about clay as an art form instead of a scientific discipline, and in
those days I didn't have to delete 80% of the discussion as e-junk mail)
