satin white cone 6 ox.

Hello, I've been firing to cone 6 oxidation, using underglazes and glazing
with a nice transparent. What I'm wondering is does anyone have a nice cone
6 recipe that is a white satin they would like to share? I'd like to
continue with my underglazes and realize I may need to reformulate them to
go on top of a satin glaze. If anyone needs a full proof clear, works great
with underglazes I'd love to share it.

Thanks, Mary Lou Zeek, Oregon

Hello. I would love to know your ^6 clear formula. I also work with
underglazes at ^6 and am now finding out that my clear is interfering with
some pinks and purples. I'm headed to the studio to run some tests. I'd
love to try yours if you don't mind sharing it. Thanks, JoAnn Axford near

Mary Lou, I have a number of ^6 glazes that my Potters' Guild ^6 group
developed. We are an open group and love to share. Will trade glaze for
glaze. Email me direct: longg@strip.colorado.edu and when I have my book
in front of me will send some to you.

What fun! Gretchen Long

Post your ^6 formula and a list of the stains that you are using. There is
probably something in one or the other that is not compatible. Switching to
another ^6 glaze may give you the same reults.

The following is a white satin glaze that I use regularly at cone 6
oxidised. I use it on a white stoneware and on a porcelain. On the
porcelain it will craze, but I use this to advantage over a copper oxide
slip in places. Gives a nice veined effect.
RECIPE:-
Potash feldspar 480
China Clay 160
Quartz 50
Dolomite 150
Whiting 100
Zinc oxide 5
LEP Frit 2279 55 (This is a Potclays low expansion frit added
to help reduce the crazing. See blow for analysis)

ANALYSIS
K2O 0.17 Al2O3 0.42 SiO2 2.16
Na2O 0.06 B2O3 0.04
CaO 0.51
MgO 0.23
LiO 0.01
ZnO 0.02

Al2O3 / S1O2 1/5.17
Coeff of Expansion 5.97 x10-6 Linear English & Turner
7.01 x10-6 Linear McLindon
Potclays Frit 2279
Li2O 0.190 Al2O3 0.430 SiO2 5.72
Cao 0.350 B2o3 1.380
ZnO 0.187
MgO 0.272

Mary Lou,

Here is a satin white glaze to try. Depending on your clay body you may
want to add more superpax to have a whiter glaze. I use porcelain so the
5% is enough, mason stains show through as well as underglaze pencils.

satin white

silica 29
neph sy 32
whiting 24
EPK 12
zinc 8
superpaz 5
Bentonite 4

This does contain zinc so watch some of the green stains.

I have another glaze that will take green stains as well as the pinks.
But I fire it to only ^5 to keep the satin look. ^6 (with the newer
orton cones)I find it is too shiny and less white. I paint on top of
this glaze with the stains. Let me know it you want to try it. You may
already have more than enough glazes to test.

Hi Mary Lou & everybody!

Here are a couple.

Ray's base ^6

K-200 30.21
Flint 22.66
Whiting 22.66
EPK 13.88
Zinc oxide 7.55 (This may kill your colors)
Mag. Carb. 3.05
----
100
Superpax 6%

Ketchup white ^6 (Ketchup Red without the Red Iron)

Gerstley Borate 31
Custer 20
Flint 29
Talc 14
EPK 6
---
100
for red;
Red Iron Oxide 15%

Good luck with these. I would be interested in that clear. Thanks!

Do the stains get chewed up only at mid-high fire ranges when zinc is in the
glaze, or does the same apply to ^04 majolica work?

>Thanks for all the responses to my message about a Satin white cone 6
glaze. I will share my clear with whoever would like to try it. I use
Amaco, Duncan, and Ceramichrome underglazes, fire to cone 6, and soak at the
end of my firing. With this clear all of my colors are rich and true to
their colors. I don't have a problem with what I'm doing now but just
wanted to try a more "majolica" type look at cone 6. (that's if it's possible)
Clear cone 6
Frit 3124 65.
Frit 3249 5.
Silica 20.
Kaolin 10.
Borax 3.
Bentonite 2%

Thanks again...Mary Lou Zeek, Oregon

Anne, I fire to ^5 and would love to have your satin white glaze that
doesn't eat mason stains if you'd be willing to share it. Thanks a
million.
