To Jon Pettyjon The old mechanical balances are still around- I think that most
the major ceramic suppliers carry them. 5 kilos is alot to measure at one
time and this might be your limiting factor as most triple beam balances go
to around 3 kilos with additional weights. If you really want a scientific
type of scale Fisher Scientific (phone 800-766-7000,U.S.) sells a Large-Pan
Beam balance ( cat#02-060) for $157.50. They are an international company
so there should be little problem in getting one. This balance has a range
of 100g-10kg. I've never used it but you could give them a call.
On the subject of electronic scales; they are very accurate and I
use them here in the research lab routinely. I am speaking of a scientific
type of scale, not a bathroom type! They do tend to cost more than the
mechanical and should they break down it is usually a costly
repair-something to keep in mind when weighting out dusty materials. Hope
this helps out. Good luck-
Keith
Who,BTW, does not work for or is any any way connected to Fisher!
