Sandra,
An alternative method of sealing is a liquid epoxy. I've used a product
called epoxy wood consolidant that's sold for penetrating and hardening
rotted wood for restoration work. It's made by Abatron, Inc. (800-445-1754).
There are probably others on the market as well. I used it to fasten upper
(pot) and lower (dish) sections of flower pots together when I didn't trust
glaze to do the job. Works rather well, although it is somewhat shiny.
Somewhat pricey, but a little goes a long way.
