I am in the process of testing and compiling a large group of
shino type glazes to use and share with the other students at Univ. of
North Texas. I have played around with a few and have used Malcolm
Davis' carbon trap with some success. I was wondering if anyone had any
favorites to share. We fire wood, salt, cone 10, and most other ways so
any recipes would be helpful.

Thanks,
Frederic Herbst

I have one recipe that I have used for years. I picked it up from Tom Marsh at
the University of Louisville. They were using it as a class glaze, so it is
reliable. Gets good carbon trap and breaks very orange. We fired to cone 9
reduction.

Spodumene 12.5
Kona F-4 Feldspar 14.5
Nepheline Syenite 50.0
English China Clay 15.0
Soda Ash 3.5
Bentonite 2.0

You also might want to contact Dannon Rhudy. She has been testing Shino glazes
for some time now. She is also a UNT grad.

Fred :

The following shino glaze works well for my classes :

Shino ^ 10 Reduction (from Don Sprague)

Soda Ash 4.04
Spodumene 15.35
Kona F4 Feldspar 18.59 (Works better with Kona F4 not Minspar)
Neph Sy 45.45
Ball Clay 16.57

Orange matt where thin and creamy tan gloss where thick. Crazes
when thick. Does trap carbon. Works well on dark coarse stonewares,
smooth white stonewares and porcelains.

>have used Malcolm Davis' carbon trap with some success

I use the following Malcolm Davis glaze with nice results :

Soda Ash 16.3
OM4 Ball Clay 13
Kaolin 17 (EPK works fine. On a lark used Avery for flourescent o)
Kona F4 9.3 (Works better with Kona F4 not Minspar)
Neph sy 38.6
Redart 5.7

Outstanding glaze! A real beauty! Thanks Malcolm. Bright orange where
thin and yellow/gold where thick. Will most definitely trap carbon. I've
had pieces come out of our Alpine pitch black! On Sam Clarkson's advice
I place near spyholes and exit flues.

BTW, sorry to miss you on Tuesday. I took Adelaide up to Denton to
meet Elmer/Jerry and tour the ceramic studios.
