self cleaning oven

Clayart subscribers,

I've been pinching pots for pit firing for about a year now and have
been drying them in my oven prior to firing them green with moderate
success. I've been experimenting with putting the oven through the self cleanin
with the pots in it. Anyone know how hot a gas oven can get when its in
'self clean' mode? When I remove pots from an oven that has gone
through a 4 hour self cleaning cycle, they sound, when tapped, as
though they've gone through a low bisque. I haven't lost any pots
this way but haven't done it enough to see if it improves the success
rate of the primitive firing. Any one out there playing with this
idea??? I'd be interested in hearing about your experience.

It is my understanding that the self-cleaning electric ovens
reach a temp of about 900F - but I'm not sure that I remember
correctly. Why don't you call the manufacturer and ask? They'll
know. HOWEVER, it might not be a good idea to bisque clay in
your oven. What about the fumes? Do you know everything that
is in your claybody? Contaminants that might be left behind?
Presumablly you cook in there...
