septic clay

updated sun 31 aug 97

Some time back there was a string on disposing of clay waste through a
septic tank system. Since I didn't have any use for the info at the time, I
didn't read it. Now, suddenly, I need to know. If I have a septic tank, can
I run clay in any form into it without eventually clogging up the system?

TIA,

Roger-
Clay will DESTROY the working action of a septic tank and field system. Can
be very expensive. The main action is not so much on the tank (although it
does tend to fill it up sooner than needed) but on the dispersal field,
where it seals the area around the pipe and stops the leaching of water
into the soil.

Clay, in its moist form, acts as a seal to earth. The main test pond makers
make, besides a source of water, is clay content of the soil. If the
content is low- they truck some in. Same thing with waste disposal
(landfill) areas.
