Try Midsouth Ceramic Supply in Tennessee. I used to live in KY and
several of my friends and myself bought Shimpo wheels at the same time.
This has been a few years ago, but I felt that I got a very good deal.
Plus, I really enjoyed dealing with Tom Turnbull. CHeck them out and
compare.
My connections with this business have purely been as a customer;
satisfied, at that.

Hi group
Does anyone out there have a Shimpo Gold 21 ?. the history on the wheel
that I just went to look at, is that the woman bought it from
Eagle...Remember them? this was about 8-10 years ago before they merged
with Cutters and both went down the tubes. Any way she bought it for
almost $900. she used it for about 3 monthes and it has been in storage
since then, so it is basically a new wheel. She wants $400 for it. I
remember that there was a point in time when Shimpo had a different gear
system, belts instead of the cone, and I wanted to make sure that this
wheel was a decent one and that I wasn't paying too much for it.
Thanks

Millie:
Turn the wheel over, look underneath. You can see what
kind of "system" there is. Shimpo's don't have a lot of
"stuff" under there, and you can see what you're getting.
Then try it out. Everything run smooth? Pedal accelerate/
decelerate without problems? That's about all you'll be able
to do short of taking off the wheel head and so on. And that
might not do you any good unless you know a lot about it.
Shimpo's last a LONG time in use, including even student use.
Whether you think it is worth the money is a matter for you to
decide. When I first started clay eight years or so ago I bought
a shimpo under similar conditions, haven't done anything to it
since then but use it, clean it up, use it...
You should check the horsepower and so on. You could
probably call shimpo, they have an 800 number, and ask them
about that specific model.

Millie,
If I had the money, I'd buy this wheel without a blink, if it is in the
shape you report. The Shimpo Gold 21 is cone drive. They don't make
them any more. I've had one for the last 5 years, bought it used for
$500.00s, and would not be without one.
Good Luck,
Lee

Dear Millie,
I got two Shimpos (our first electric wheels in the shop) in 1978.
They're still going strong. They are used by three classes 18 hours
per week and more. For $400, you could buy it and fix any problems
should there be any.

Millie,
I have a Shimp Gold...believe me when I say it is a "most excellent"
wheel. It would take a lady like you described a lifetime to wear it out.
Unless it was really abused, I would say it well worth the money.

My Shimpo is 30 years old. The only work it has ever had was reconditioning
the motor, after being left unused in a shed in humid Florida for about 10
years. Altho' old...it still works great! But in my old age...I would
rather have it set higher to be able to stand while throwing.

Hello Sir,
I'm sorry to hear about this, but would respect your decision regarding
our wheels. The Master Series is still in production, it is still
advertised in our website, at www.shimpoceramics.com. The controller
itself is UL certified, which has to go to a lot testing including
Hi-pot test to withstand 1000V at one second. This is a requirement
that we need to conform. We tried our best to make the wheel as best as
we can. In fact for the first time in the Pottery wheel industry we
have invested in developing the new RK-Whisper, which has a brushless DC
motor, direct drive, better response. This is an addition to our family
of wheels. The motor itself is expensive, but Shimpo tried to make the
cost cheaper and more affordable, without passing the cost to end users.
I would like to apologize about your mishap with our wheels even though
I have no prior knowledge on how the cost mounted to a whooping $800.00.
Thank you very much for your comment, I have already made aware of the
parties that do service and alternatives. Wishing you the best and hope
that in the near future we can service you again.
Best regards,
Arthur Morales

Years and years ago I remember an e-mail, I read, that stated Shimpo
would give you $100.00 for your old cone type, if you bought one of
their new ones. I'm thinking the old cone type that were Battleship
steel thickness. Memory is vague on this but maybe that was when the
parts were getting scarce. Naturally I figured they were trying to rip
me off, cause the cone type were so good that they wanted them all
back, needless to say I kept mine. Mike Gordon
