Where should I buy a Shimpo? I want to do a bit of price comparing
before I
fork out the big bucks. I know of Kickwheel and Bailey's and there is
one local shop--anywhere else I should check?
Does anybody know if Shimpo has a website?

The celadon exhibit that is currently featured at the Freer Gallery of
the Smithsonian
is quite lovely to see. And don't miss the newly opened gems and rocks
gallery in the
Natural History Museum. There is the Hope diamond, of course, and my
personal favorite, the flawless crystal globe that is bigger than a
bowling ball. It was really fun to see the many crystal formations of
minerals like feldspar and spodumene and quartz, etc., that go into glaze
formulas (formulae?)--especially since I am only just learning.
Oh, the black pearls and the topaz ball and the star sapphires....there
is so much to
see!...crystals of every imaginable color and some amazing combinations.

Pam and all,

I suspect you are talking about a new purchase, but this gives me a chance to
share with the group a discovery I made lately. I had looked for months in
the want ads for used equipment, but never saw a thing. Then I decided to put
in an ad asking for used equipment, thinking that maybe a few people would
see the ad and think this is a chance to give rid of "old Aunt Harriet's"
kiln or wheel that's been taking up so much room in the basement. It ran for
a couple of weeks for around $20.

I got over ten calls for a variety of things, kilns mostly, followed by
wheels, kick and electric. Most of the kilns were priced higher than I could
pay and I didn't need one quite that badly, but the wheels were a bargain.
Both Shimpos, one about the same age as mine (mid 70s) and in great condition
and the other a lower end model, but still in great condition. We also got in
the same deal with the lower end Shimpo, a Skutt kiln and 70+ ceramic molds.
I plan to advertise the molds and kiln (once we test to see how well it
works, if at all) and get back some of the cost for the wheel. The total
package for everything (both wheels, ect. and assorted tools, banding wheels)
was less than $700. In a month or so I plan to run the ad again, still
looking for two more wheels.

I just figured people probably say all the time they need to get rid of
something, but don't take the time or effort to put an ad together. Works for
me.
