To the List:

Some time back someone very kindly sent me a recipe for a shino
SLIP, which I proceeded, somehow, to misplace. If anyone has one,
could you either send to me or post to list? I'd be very greatful.
Thank you.

Hi Dannon:

I don't think that this is the receipe you had before, but you may want to
try this. It's a nice orange shino slip and works well in all types of
reduction firings. Without airborne wood ash or salt or soda vapor it needs
to be wetted a bit with a very light spray of wood ash glaze. It's OK by
itself and develops a warm orange but it's REAL dry.

Craig Martell-Oregon

Shino Slip (based on Virginia Wirt's Carbon Trap)

kona f-4 8.0
nepheline syenite 31.0
spodumene 13.0
soda ash 3.5
helmer kaolin 35.0
epk kaolin 10.0

Thanks, Craig and June and Al and all who have sent shino slip
recipies. Will let you know how they do; may fire this weekend.
On the other hand, may wait until it is a bit cooler. Say,
end of November or so.

Craig, would you send me your email address? Thanks.

June,

Why does the Anderson Ranch Shino Slip say:

>Bentonite 3-5% on porcelain<

I didn't know that bentonite changed a recipe to matter which clay body was
used?

TIA, Debi

What is shino slip used for?

June Perry on sun 20 jul 97

Try it with and without and see what the difference is. I haven't tested it
yet so I don't know what the difference would be. May have to do with trying
to match a better fit with the porcelain body.

June

Once again someone has made reference to "Shino Slip". I asked the last
time and I repeat, what is "Shino Slip"? Is it used under a Shino glaze
or instead of a Shino glaze and why?

Cynthia :

It is a little confusing. In my experience, shino slips are formulated with a
higher clay content and are meant for sodium vapor glazing or
wood-firing. You would think with a higher clay content a shino slip is
meant for application on leather-hard greenware. In my experience, this
is not the case with the following shino slips I apply to bisque-ware :

Avery Slip ^ 10 Salt/Soda and Wood (from Dee Buck)

Neph Sy 50 (by weight)
Avery Kaolin 50

Shino Slip ^ 10 Salt/Soda and Wood (based on Virginia Wirt's Carbon
Trap) from Craig Martell/Clayart

kona f-4 8.0
nepheline syenite 31.0
spodumene 13.0
soda ash 3.5
helmer kaolin 35.0 (I used Avery)
epk kaolin 10.0

Shaner Shino Slip ^ 10 Salt/Soda and Wood (from Bill Newman)

Kona F4 10.8
Spodumene 15.2
Soda Ash 4.0
Neph Sy 45.0
OM4 15.0
EPK 35.0

Sandy Simon Shino Slip ^ 10 Salt/Soda and Wood (from Bill Newman)

Soda Ash 3.2
Spodumene 12.16
Kona F4 8.64
Neph Sy 36
EPK 28
OM4 12

All of these are very nice orange/gold flashing slips in ^ 10 soda. The
Shaner slip has the added characteristic of a crackle surface when
applied thickly to bisque ware.

A caveat. If your not happy with the results in a soda firing just re-fire
the piece in a cone 10 reduction firing and notice the improvement. John
Britt suggested this to me and I was surprised when it worked ;-)

The following black slip is a nice contrast over shino slips :

Bray Black Slip ^ 10 Salt/Soda and Wood (from Bill Newman)

Alberta Slip 72.75
Ball Clay 27.25

Chrome Oxide 10
Cobalt Carbonate 5
Red Iron Oxide 5

Very black color. Works well over shino slips. I prefer to prepare this as
a defloculated slip.

Good luck!

A Shino slip can be made from any Shino glaze you use. Just add EPK,
Helmer or any white orange type of clay to your Shino starting at
10%..then plus 12.5%, then 15%) etc etc. It works with any Shino you
use as a base will give you a good slip to start experimenting with. If
your glaze has spar in it. I would try a soda spar as that will help
promote orange color in the sip.
