There is one area I have tried, and with my own account I have added a 8% +
to the cost of my peice for @shipping and handling. via ups. It might not
seem alot but everything counts when it comes down to your DOWN time in not
making pots....
$150.00 pot at 8% $12.00 of the cost added into it.
Hopes this helps somewhat,
I have also always run out of money, when it comes down to adding and
sending in art shows so I have substracted appox.10% of the top, for money,
used STRICTLY for booth and jury fees. Food for thought.

Lisa, when I shipped a piece to Australia I checked everything and everyone
I could, including the shipper recommended by the Fletcher people. To my
surprise, I found by far the least expensive to be American Airlines (a
little under $l00 for a piece about 20"D x ll"H, double boxed, 20 pounds or
so). The killer is the RETURN shipping which is extremely expensive. Same
holds true for stuff sent to Japan.

I just sent a peice to New Zealand for the Fletcher show. They suggested to
use FRITZ COMPANIES INC. The closest one to Ohio is:

It was about $70 one way, but Fletcher picked up the charges at the airport.

I just shipped a piece to the Fletcher folks via Parcel Post (which they
recommend against) for $30 as opposed to $230 via the recommended carrier. I
have had work in this show and others in Asia and feel that it's worth the
risk to send parcel post if I really pack well. Double box etc. So far my
theory has worked. Return shipping is another story. I generally try to price
so the work will sell overseas rather than try and retreive it. I've
donated work I've had in the Mino show to museums in Japan rather than pay to
get it back.

Kurt,
I include the price of materials and packing labor into
the price of the piece. Then I add the ups cost and
charge it to the customer. This cost is out of my control
and variable, so it seems right.
Galleries appreciate the packing and materials being
included,when they notice, although I wonder if it just
makes my work seem more expensive.

I noticed that too, boxes I shipped would be billed a few pounds
more, now my scale cant be 4 pounds off on a 15 pound package! A
commercial was billed as residential. I shipped out a wood crate once
and was billed $5 extra fee for shipping an item "not surrounded by a
cardboard container"

You need to register for an acct to check the rates, they depend on
your location as the zones charts are based on where you are- my zone
2 is your zone 6 probably.

Here's a sample of a package I shipped that cost me $14.84 thru UPS,
this is what DHL quotes;

Time will tell, but DHL came today and picked up my shipment
perfectly and as scheduled, it says 3 business days delivery UPS says
4, with all this considered is there really any comparison at all or
isn't it DHL is just better in every way? Like the UPS commercial
that goes "What can brown do for me?" I say brown can kiss my arse-
adios UPS!!!!!!

I am guessing a fair number of you probably ship things as I do-
using UPS, well over the past few months I've had nothing but
problems- everything from double billing and billing errors to missed
pickups to leaving a $300 box off at the totally WRONG address which
was an abandoned house in the city- leaving it on the front porch by
the street on a Friday! Amazing it wasn't stolen over the weekend.

Last week was the last straw, so I investigated alternatives, Fedex
was one but they require a business listed phone # they can verify
before they will pickup residential packages! So I looked into DHL, I
signed up for an account and talked to their CSR for over 20 minutes,
they spent the time to answer all my questions with no feeling I was
being rushed or they had something else to do.

So here's the rub!! I do a rate check on a box I need to ship to
Florida, I was floored, here is what the comparison was;

23x18x16 box, pick up Iowa and deliver Florida- both residential, 50
pounds $85 value.

UPS: $35.50

DHL; $26.32

Both charge for pickup and also for delivery to residential, and a
fuel surcharge, the DHL price with all that included ($2 res
delivery, $3 pickup charge) was $26.32. As I recall UPS charged me $2
per BOX to pick up here not $3 for the entire pickup like DHL.

I did another rate check on a 15 pound item I ship a lot, it was
basically the same story- hands down cheaper than UPS. DHL also
offers daily pickup service $7 a week, UPS wanted $7-$16 a week and
the $16 a week charge was if you had nothing going out, or only a
couple of shipments.

I think I'm going to be real happy with DHL

I found it easier to use than the UPS site which has always been a
major contention with me.

For my business, we use FEDEX EXPRESS exclusively, even to the
exclusion of the US Postal (sorry Gail :>). This is not snobbery,
FEDEX being the most expensive option of the six common delivery
services...(FEDEX, UPS, GPS, AIRBORNE, RPS, DHL...yeah six, ok) it
is simply a matter of insisting on accountability. In 14 years,
they have never lost a package, and a package has been delayed by
weather (airport closure) only twice. That's astonishing
reliability, even to me. Our FEDEX bill last month approached
$1200US. For us, that's a pretty average month. Needless to say,
we use the service a lot. People can be quite forgetful.

We ship client's forgotten personal goods, new house plans, artwork,
oriental rugs, whatever the client needs or wants, all over the
world at a moment's notice and the items simply MUST get there in
the specified time. No arguments, no questions, no frantic calls in
the middle of the afternoon "Where is it???!!!"
We've had to send everything from forgotten laptops and Palm Pilots
to car keys, wallets, kid's favorite toys, even one woman's wedding
ring. =20

DHL, FEDEX Ground (not express), AIRBORNE, and GPS are
_subcontracted_ services. The parent company subs out the delivery
to a second and sometimes third party.
They're contracted, but have NO CONNECTION to the parent company,
other than operating under their name. If you have a problem with
some services, you are likely to receive no more than a shrug in
response to your inquiries followed by a "what do you expect me to
do about it?"

To me, failure to deliver on service promised is more than bad
faith; it is an invitation for me to find another provider...one
that works on time, consistently, no questions asked.
For me that's FEDEX EXPRESS, but of course, YMMV. Whichever service
you choose, be careful. Know what you're dealing with. They are
not all they appear, and hiding behind a name is commonplace these
days.

Just my two cents.

One thing to note is there is no more "Airborne" it was either bought
out or merged and is now known as DHL, try www.airborne.com and you
see it redirects to the dhl.com web site
DHL has recently expanded and changed, so whatever was once with DHL
or Airborne that you knew from before has likely changed with this
merge or buyout.

ALl I know is I checked the rates and they were across the board less
than UPS, they set up my acct right away, perfectly, no BS, they
picked up the first shipment perfectly on time and where at.

I tried to sign up with FedEX last fall but they amazingly REQUIRED
a shipper from a residence have a telephone number locally listed in
directory assistance as a business with the shipping address
connected to the number! I called them twice to confirm this just to
be sure it wasn't some CSR who hadn't a clue because it made no sense.
So if you have a business in your house and want to remain low-key,
having your address, name etc listed in the local phone directory and
yellow pages AS a business operating at that residential location is
a sure fire way to be "discovered"

Even the DHL CSR was amazed when I mentioned it.

What changing my phone to satisfy FedEX would do is force me to close
my current phone acct, open a brand new business acct which of course
you pay a fee for the change, and then they estimated it would cost
fifty something dollars a month plus taxes and other charges.,
basically double what i currently pay.
I hardly ever use my phone as it is, in fact I dropped the phone
service to a vacation mode for 2 months last summer and considered
doing away with it entirely.

They actually lost a 3' crate of mine, for
a month! Still better than UPS, though.

Well it looks like the recent shipments with DHL have gone extremely well!

A 51# box I shipped out Friday afternoon ground service from Iowa
arrived in North Carolina today, besides costing $21 v/s $29 for UPS
look at how fast this thing travelled- it even beat their stated 2
business days delivery estimate;


2/28/05 5 : 14 pm Shipment delivered. Franklin, NC
8 : 21 am Arrived at DHL facility.
Fletcher, NC
12 : 57 am Departing origin. Atlanta, GA
2/27/05 7 : 29 am Processed at Sort Facility.
Wilmington, OH
2/25/05 1 : 42 pm Picked Up by DHL. Shipper's Door

Two other boxes heading for New York City shipped Friday too are now at;

2/28/05 7 : 31 pm Departing origin. Allentown, PA

It looks like they will arrive tomorrow (Tuesday)

I'm impressed thus far with DHL!

Randal,

From my shop in Alaska, for years I shipped all over the USA and Canada
via USPS Priority Air Mail. I had tried both UPS and FEDEX and had
nothing but problems in addition to high costs. I finally tried the
Priority /Airmail route and it worked so well that we stuck to it for
the next ten years almost exclusively. In all that time I don't recall
even having more than a couple of claims to have to deal with through
the USPS.

I will say that we took great pains with packing our boxes , and it took
just a bit to figure out what would work for us. But my product was
delicate porcelain figurines, and USPS got it done.

You might give them a try.

Hi John,
Yeah USPS is okay a lot of the time too, though I found their rates
just a little bit higher than UPS. I used USPS Parcel Post to ship 2
pieces to Japan as it was the cheapest method of all, they said 4
weeks for delivery but they got there in about 2 weeks I think.
