Hello Clayart friends:

I am getting ready to do my first wholesale show this fall and I need some
advice. How do express shipping cost to your customers? I plan to use
mostly UPS, and I would like to charge as close to "at cost" as possible.
But the customer needs to know beforehand approximately how much shippping
will be. Do you charge a flat fee like LL Bean or try to relate it to the
dollar total of the order? Do you attempt to figure out the weight of the
shipment at the time of ordering and then use a weight/zone chart to
figure out the actual cost? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

Patsy...As you well know Pottery is one of the more difficult things for
one to ship SAFELY... don't forget about your TIME to pack and the cost of
packing/shipping materials which includes bubble wrap (the large bubble
protect best.. call Maine Shipping) and boxes and styfoam peanuts, shredded
newspapers are better fillers but weighs more, tape, labels and the like...
these items are not free... besides the actual insured shipping cost...
charging somewhere around 8% of the wholesale value should be reasonable.
Anything less and it is going to be another debt that you will assume...

Hi Patsy:

There are 2 ways of handling this. If your customer has a UPS account,
you can ship collect. If not, *I* find it comes out to 12-15% of a
wholesale
order.

Hope this is helpful.
