shop lighting

This is a little off the topic of clay but close enough I hope. I
belong to a coop gallery where we have been struggling with the problem
of how to upgrade our shop lighting.

One group of people wants lighting that looks intimate and favors
using all track lighting with halogen floods and spots.

Another group wants general lighting from fluorescents with diffuser
covers so customers can find their ways around the store and accent
lighting done with track lights.

Could those of you with either direct experience or classroom study
in lighting design offer me any adviCe to take to my fellow members?
I've been trying to find textbooks or publications on retail lighting
design but so far have been coming up dry.

I guess I could mention that our shop is a long narrow shape with 15 ft
ceilings, white walls and ceiling tile. We have paintings, fabric,
photos, and jewelry as well as clay.

Thank you for any solid leads on info.

Hi Jan,
In our Gallery in Montpelier we use both...we have an overall layout of
flourescent(full spectrum) lighting AND a layout of tracks with 90 watt
halogen flood bulbs that are oriented towards specific displays. Our
gallery is bright. We don't go for the _elegant_
spotlights-in-a-dark-gallery-look.
Take Care,
Jennifer
encouraging all to come to VT where the leaf colors are about to peak.
