Thank so many of you for your suggestions for removing my wheelhead. We
tried all of them to no avail. Heating the wheelhead, for example,
didn't work, great as it sounded, because the aluminum wheelhead has a
steel insert just where the steel shaft enters the wheelhead; thus, no
one part expanded away from the other.
We finally solved the whole matter by 1) removing the bottom cover
rather than working with crowbars etc from the top. We then were able
to remove the belt, the belt drive wheel and, as a unit, the shaft, the
bearing housing assembly, AND wheelhead through the top of the box.
This only required the removal of four bolts, and loosening and
disconnecting a spring which keeps the belt under tension. 2) We
then took the whole assembly to a machine shop where we pried the wheel
off the shaft. 3) While disassembled, the machinist shaved the top of
the shaft .0005 inches in order to reduce its diameter. This allowed
easy installation AND removal of the wheelhead in the future.
Reassembly, which was completed at home, required approximately one
hour. Total cost at the machine shop was $40.00.
So far, having thrown about 8 hours, I love the new Shimpo! I love the
large pedal, the quiet D.C. motor, the larger wheelhead, and, believe it
or not, that roomy splashpan with drain. The attached worktable is
great!
It was worth the $40.00 and also allowed my support person to minutely
examine a new machine shop with all its bells and whistles.
