What do other individuals and or Universities use to label their slides.
We no longer have a typewriter that will work in such a small format and
something for computer would be ideal.

Thanks!

Susan, The art dept at Santa Barbara community college is running up
against the same thing. We are setting up a data base with File
maker pro 3.0. So far the printing onto labels has not been mastered
but the data base works well. Avery labels # 5267 seem to work but we
do not want them to fade etc. So maybe Prolaser Labels "slidescribe"
may be more permanent... let me know what you run across

Susan- a couple of questions, etc

what word processor do you have, and does it have variable size fonts?
what printer do you have?

That was for possible future answers, in the meantime, for now-

We (Iris and I) use "word", and a PC operating under Windows95 (also works
under Windows 3.1 and DOS) and either a 24 pin dot-matrix printer, or an
Epson inkjet.
(the dot matrix makes a more water-proof label-- fingers DO get sweaty !)

We get full sheet sticky back label paper from "Office Depot" or similar
supplier of
such brands as Avery. The stock we got has (Surprise !!) full instructions
for making custom labels and such in the box. !

Good luck from the denizens of Persimmon Hill

Susan:

Look in a computer magazine such as Mac User-there will be a program and
the label supplies listed somewhere in the magazine.

I bought a program for about 10 bucks at a computer store that works pretty
good , Expert Labels. You can save the labels so it's easy to print out
multiples when needed. There are some images you can insert like arrows to
indicate which way is up too. The label size, font and point size of the
letters can all be created and saved. You can buy sheets of slide labels 8.5
x 11 that work well in printers. The labels look professional! ( After
buying this I discovered that I already had a program on WordPerfect.)

I have a really old program designed to track photo and slide info in a
modified relational database, and print out labels in a variety of formats.

You can also configure your word processing software to print the labels:
they are sold in continuous-feed or sheet format. Call the Avery label
people to make sure.

I use ClarisWorks. The database module has a selection of Avery label
dimensions to choose from, and since you've entered the slide info into the
database it's pretty easy to put out some clean-looking labels. To check
the alignment I put a sheet of labels in backwards and hold the printed
result up to the light. This way I don't waste labels.

Avery makes some labels that fit slides well. They're listed as return
address laser labels, 1/2" x 1 3/4" Avery # 5267. I special order them from
my local office supply store. Wordperfect does have this listed in their
canned list of Avery label formats.

I hate to bring this up again, but I recall a thread last year by people
discussing the printing of slide labels. I ignored it at the time, but now
I want to know. I have a Macintosh with CarisWorks database and a
StyleWriterII printer. Does anyone have any experience with this
configuration or does anyone know of software that might allow me to print
slide labels?

Thanks for any help offered.

I think the slide librarian where I went to grad school had a fancier
labelling program, but when it came time for me to start making my slides
pretty, I used Avery's itty-bitty labels and their software. I can't
remember the name of it - I think it might be "LabelPro" or something like
that. I think it comes in a Mac version.

Seems like there's a software package called"MacLabel", maybe. I'm sure the
Macheads online will pipe up about it - everyone wants better slide
labelling!

Sorry I can't be more exact (I think, maybe...)

Erin. (Probably.)

Both Word Perfect and Microsoft Word have label applications in their
programs. For example, with MS Word choose Tools on the task list,
choose envelopes on the Tools menu, click options, choose the type of
label you are using, probably Avery 5267, answer the questions about
your printer, etc... , choose OK and type away. I don't know anything
about Claris, but if it has a tool menu, check to see if it has a labels
and envelopes option.

I should have been more thorough and used the correct syntax in
explaining how to do slide labels in MS Word (very similar in Word
Perfect). Here is a more correct and complete explaination:

Both Word Perfect and Microsoft Word have label applications in their
programs. For example, with MS Word choose Tools on the menu bar.
Choose Envelopes and Labels on the Tools menu, click the Labels tab,
click the Options button. Select your printer type. Choose the Label
Product that you are using (probably Avery Standard). Select the
Product Number (probably 5267-return address). Choose OK and type away.
Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

Harvey Sadow

Harvey Sadow posted to clarify the labeling ability of MS Word. It is in the
Tools Menu on the main toolbar. However, it has been my experience that when
you type up a label it will print 80 (if using a sheet of Avery's tiny
labels) of the same label. In order to do your labels seperately, you might
consider the Mail Merge option in the tools menu. It's a little complicated,
but you'll be able to print one of everything.

If you're interested, I can post the instructions. And Harvey, if you know a
different way, please let me know. I'd hate to think I've been doing this
the hard way all this time!

We use a program called File Maker Pro at Santa Barbara City College .
This program seems to work well for printing on lables. Avery labels
#5267 1/2"X13/4" and pro laser labels catalog #LL -su 1 7/8"X 7/8
" .

Marcia Selsor on thu 23 jan 97

dear Erin,
On MS label selection you may chose to print one (single) or all.
You just have to set it up when you start. My problem with it has been
getting the borders correct.

The source, (perhaps THE SOURCE) for photographic archival supplies,
including everything one could possibly need for slides, prints, etc., is
Light Impressions 1-800-828-6216

I use a product from them called Labelware, available fro both MAC and IBM
platforms that creates and prints museum quality professional labels for
your slides. Very affordable. You can also order direct from SlideScribe at
1-800-345-4118.

Both vendors are suppliers of archival photographic supplies and related
products.

Glad you asked Erin. When you click on Envelopes and Labels, look in
the lower right hand corner of the Envelopes and Labels dialog box. You
will see PRINT and a choice of Full Page or Single Label. Choose Single
Label and then you can choose the row # and column # of the label you
want to print on. So you can easily print one label this way.

Also, when you choose Full Page of Same Label, choose New Document.
This will give you a blank page with all the label cells marked with
dotted lines. I often type twenty labels, a current portfolio's worth,
down the left side, and copy and paste each label across the page,
giving me four sets of twenty, and then save the file. When I need
slide labels, I have four complete sets already printed, or stored in
the computer, ready for any changes I might want to make.

Have fun, Harvey

To the originator ot this thread, sorry I can't remember your name... I tried
posting you regarding this subject awhile ago but believe my post may have
been lost in cyberspace somewhere. Hence, my re-post...

I've been using a software product very similar sounding to what Jonathan
wrote you about (Labelware) only this is called Cradoc Captionwriter. It too
is sold to the professional photography industry and has all of the photo
archival qualities necessary for museum quality slide labels. You may want to
inquire about both and then weigh your decision after researching each. I
bought my software about 3-4 years ago and at that time the Windows version
was still being developed. (mine is DOS based) I'm sure it's available in
Windows by now. Contact them at:

I would like to add to Jonathan's recommendations. I too use the
SlideScribe Prolaser Labels. I began doing this on the recommendation of
the advice of the woman who runs our Visual Resource Center; and I know
she did her research on the issue. I do my lables on a program called
Labelmate which sells for $50, Labelbase which Jonathan uses sells for
$20, both are now available for Mac and IBM. I have not used the
templates on MS word or Wordperfect but I have a student that uses WP
for her labels, and it appears that Labelmate is far more flexable in
finetuning the placement of the text on the labels.

Labelmate, Labelware, and the slidescribe labels are all produced by a
company in Minneapolas called Image Innovations. These people have
always been extremely friendly and helpful. Their number is
1-800-345-4118 (I have no commercial affiliation with them...)
