Ok, This discussion begs the next obvious question. What actually goes
on the label? Is more required than Name of Artist, date, size of the
piece? Do different juries require different stuff or is it always pretty
much the same. Do people have special numbering or identification systems
that could link it with a database that could tell more info than what is
on the slide? For instance, how old the slide is, who took it, under what
conditions, more details about the piece, glaze or technique used, etc.

Russell,

Sorry you're sick. The usual information required on labels
is: artist's name, title of piece (or "untitled"),
media/technique (thrown, porcelain, woodfired, etc.) Size. Some
want date, dot in lower left corner for ease of placing in
carosel.
Some ask for arrow pointing to "top" instead of dot.

Artist/title on top or left side. Media/technique, size, date
on bottom or right side (depending on orientation of image).
Dot in lower left, or arrow upper right.

You can get more information on by making the type really small,
but you'd be surprised how much this irritates jurors, because
it is VERY hard to read.

Russel,

There is a "pretty much standard" for labeling slides:

_________________________________________
| Name of Artist "Top" |
| address or phone # |
| ________________________________ |
| | | |
| | Film | |
| | | |
| |_______________________________| |
| Title |
| Medium |
| * Dimensions |
|________________________________________|

Be sure & include your area code if you use your phone number

The asterisk represents a red dot (the best marker I've found for this is a
PaperMate F-16 Permanent Marker which does not smear or rub off). - usual
disclaimers! The red dot enables the person who's loading the slides to
see at a glance that ALL of the slides are in the correct position
(up/front).

In the jurying process, it's easy for a mix-up to happen no matter how
careful everyone is, so I always put an address or phone number on them.
There has only been one time when I didn't get my slides back, & that was
from a newspaper.

I also lable (with a permanent marker) my name, address & phone number on
the plastic slide holder.

Regarding additional info: in a competion, the jurors can be looking at
1,000 (or more) slides, and very rarely will questions come up on glazes,
temp, etc. That info can be included on your printed slide list sheet.

Hope this helps!
