Clayarters:
Thanks for the many great ideas in the past. I would appreciate your
feedback regarding slipcasting in two areas:
1. Our slip is "jelling" in the molds. It is not turning complete
solid during the sitting time, however, some of our pieces are fairly
delicate and the jelling causes problems for us when we are
de-molding. We also notice it slightly in the mixing tank. (We are
mixing 250 gallons per batch.)
2. The slip is firing nicely (electric kilns), however, the fired
bisque is not as white as we would like it to be. There is probably
a simple solution to this through Kaolin or a whitening agent,
however, I would like to hear from someone with more experience than
I have.
If preferable, feel free to contact me directly for any additional
details that are required to make a suggestion or if you want to have
a more detailed discussion.
Thanks for your assistance - its greatly appreciated.

I don't know your experience with slip. Mine is minimum. I just looked up
Gelling and found that this is caused because of too much deflocculant or too
much electrolyte in your mix.
David Cowley`s Book "Moulded and Slipcast Pottery and Ceramics", suggests
0.3% to 0.5% of the weight of the clay being used.
Good luck

Does anyone have Stephen Hill's slip formulas handy? I recently made up
several of them and then lost the recipes.
Thanks!

Misplaced Stephen Hill's slip formula. Would sure appreciate it if someone
would send it to me.

Here's a technical question for ye
I've been using the ancient white slip recipe from Daniel Rhodes book =
over Stoneware clay:
Rhodes White Slip Cone 6-10 over dry body
15.00 Kaolin
15.00 KT #1-4 Ball Clay
20.00 Glomax LL Calcined Kaolin
20.00 Soda Feldspar
20.00 Flint
5.00 Zircopax
5.00 Borax
I use Standard Ceramics Stoneware body 259 (listed for cone 6-10)
Let it dry
Dip it in the above slip
Bisque with an 04 cone in the sitter
Problem is - it's powdery after the bisque and if I flub a glaze =
application and wash the glaze off the pot - half the slip comes off too
???

Rick,
This is a crackle slip recipe. Look up Tony Winchester's article in CM last 3 years I recall. Use the Rhodes Crackle Slip receipe there. They may be the same. If the are, then its your stoneware but more than likely your application of the slip. Try thicker or thinner. This stuff likes to fall off. I would build thinner layers up and stick a little bentonite in the mix or cmc gum. Use the gum before the bentonite. Of course, the gum or bentonite might nullify the crackle effect. If you want the best slip, call up Alligator Clay Co. and order a box of Coleman porcelain. There is no better porcelain slip out there. It sticks to anything. It has a food grade plasticizer in it. Almost magical. Thank sciene and Tom Coleman. I make pots with the porcelain and save my reclaim for the slip.
Hey, you got some very nice feeling pots there on your site. You're capturing something raw and dynamic. Keep it up.
