When I arrived here two years ago there was a full five-gallon black of a
very nice ^10 glaze called "Sloan's Black." It gives a very nice slightly
irridescent satin charcoal black in reduction firing. There is no recipe for
the glaze around anywhere that I've been able to find, and I have a number
of students who really love it. Anyone out there ever heard of this glaze?
We'd appreciate any help you can give.

Here is a cone 9-10 black glaze recipe that has no name but looks like what
you describe; irridescent, satin charcoal black in reduction; like a black
pearl. I acquired this glaze 25 years ago & if I had a gas kiln this would
still be my favorite glaze.
pot feldspar 22.7
whiting 9.7
flint 5.8
kaolin 12.0
zinc oxide 2.5
rutile 1.5
Tin oxide 1.0
cobalt oxide 0.5
RIO 4.0
manganese 1.5

Vince-
We use a glaze that looks exactly as you describe. it is a ^10 glaze
that can be used in either reduction or oxidation. It looks metallic
and satiny only in reduction, though. It is extremely stable and very
dependable... Its a great glaze. It even matures as early as ^6. Of
course its an Albany glaze. Heres the formula:
Black Loretta
Neph Syen -- 15%
Albany Slip Clay -- 75%
Black Cobalt Oxide -- 5%
Enjoy, Hope this is what you're looking for.
