Anyone have any experience with the SlumpHump plaster mold systems ?
I'm thinking about purchasing a set to make plaster bats and a domed mold
for making dishes, etc.
Thanks,

Ya-Shih,
I know a potter who uses them and loves them! I have purchased a couple and
have a few tips. When filling the mold w/plaster, BE SURE THE MOLD IS
SITTING ON A LEVEL SURFACE!! If not the mold will not fill properly and you
will have problems on the wheel (not sitting on the wheelhead properly or
crooked pot). Also be sure to fill them all the way, or you will have the
same problem. They do take a while to come out of the mold, so don't hurry
them.
If you choose to throw on them (they come with a wheel head adapter) instead
of using them as a slump/hump mold, you will have to learn how to throw all
over again, BACKWARD! (not physically) We have learned to "pull up" our
pots, with this system, you have to push/pull DOWN the clay. It takes a few
tries to get the hang of it. And I thought they would never come off! I
babied the drying process worring about how I was going to get them off the
mold! The bowl really worried me! But they actually POP RIGHT OFF when
they are ready!
Have fun!!

Hello Ya-Shih,
A fellow potter friend of mine does some nice bowls with these type of
molds. He just adds some interesting feet aft. the slab is draped on
the mold & waa laa....
Good luck..

Ya Shih - I have used this system for flat bats and 80% of them do
NOT drop flat onto the key plate which renders a flat bat unuseable
because the top surface is wobbly. A friend also made some flat ones
& had the same problem. To get them anywhere near flat, we had to gouge out
the negative grooves which were supposed to fit the positive key
plate. A really big job & a really big disappointment considering the
time & money sunk into their making. I regret having to give any
product such a bad rap but I have now switched to Steve Jepson for
supplying bats with the Randall system - they work fine so far.
This may or may not be an issue with making things on the
slump/hump version. Karen Gringhuis
