soda ash adjustments

Hi,
THis is no burning q, like some that flame through here. More like a spark...

I read that sodium silicate and soda ash work together well as
deflocculants, and they work fine for me, its true. Several sources talk
earnestly of adjusting the slip to account for temperature and humidity.
Unfortunately, nobody I've read says exactly how that's done.

Under what conditions (hot, humid or both)...

Do you raise or lower the overall amount of deflocculant?

Do you change the ratio of soda ash and sodium silicate?

Just trying to figure out why it is I do what I do.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff :

The recipe I use for a deflocculated slip is from Charles McKee's
"Ceramics Handbook A Guide to Glaze Calculation Materials and
Processes."

Deflocculated Slip

Dry Clay 2
Water 1

Sodium Silicate .5 % of Dry Clay
Soda Ash .5 % of Dry Clay

This consistency is good for pouring and dipping. I also like to decorate
with a thick slip. To achieve the viscosity I want I put an amount of slip in
a blender and add dry clay until the blender blades can barely move the
material. I use this thick slip for "Hakeme" type decoration on leather hard
clay.

Good luck!
