Hi all,
I just looked through about 30 old ceramics monthly for one that had
instructions as to how to build a spray booth. Couldn't find it. I think
this may have been
discussed recently. Is a spray booth anything more than an exhaust fan
mounted on the back of a box- maybe with a filter in front?
An old electric wheel I bought has a rust wheel head without holes for bat
pins. Could I paint some floor acrylic on the wheel so it doesn't hurt
the hands of my students? can steel be drilled for bat pins?
Thanks in advance

Leslie- a couple of tips for the paint adhesion problem-- get it as clean as
you can, then get some "Naval Jelly", usually available at a "home
improvement" type store, in the paint dept. This will clean the residual
rust and give "tooth" for the paint. Follow the instructions, including
those about safety.
As to the holes, yes, they can be drilled, but to get them in the right
place, and straight, is a problem. I suggest a local machine shop.
BUT--- DRILL THE HOLES BEFORE PAINTING !
Bill- "Been there, done that" but safe back on Persimmon Hill.

Leslie,
Yes a spray booth is basicaly an exhaust fan with a filter.
Sophisticated ones consider air flow paths etc but as long as you pull
air in away from the person spraying and exhaust it outdoors you'll be
OK. Usually it's a good idea to exhaust high so it won't be inhaled by
passersby or drift into others' windows etc depending on the location.
Most local codes will require exhausting at least 12" above the nearest
roof peak so as to not get return vapors. Be safe but don't ask the
questions if you can't stand the answer.
The wheel head can be cleaned up very nicely with fine sandpaper and
water. Get some garnet sandpaper #80 if the wheel is real rusty and
then end with #120. If you really want a nice shine you can always end
with #600 for a good polish. Easy to do while the wheel is spinning and
amost as much fun as throwing a pot.
Yes the wheel head can be drilled and fitted with dowel pins for bats.
If your not familar with tools or using an electric drill ask anyone
with a drill press or a school shop, or small machine shop to do it.
They shouldn't charge more than couple of bucks - maybe they'll even do
it gratis.
