I've been doing alot of spraying (or I guess you can also call it air brushing)
of stains. Frequently I get small specks which fire black. Which is annoying
because I want to achieve a very even color finish (the colors I use are light
too which make the specks show up pretty clearly). I think these specks are
tiny pieces of rust which somehow are getting from the air compressor to the
spray gun. The specks are so tiny though that they only show up after firing.
My air compressor is pretty old, but I'd rather not have to spend a lot of money
for a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can rectify this
problem?
Thanks in advance.

Grace,
There are air filters made for just this purpose. You connect them to
the outlet of your compressor and then hook up your hose to that. They
are designed to filter water condensation as well. This prevents "spurts
of water ruining your spraying too. Contact your local art supply store
for air brush type filters or try an automotive paint supplier for a
huskier version.
Hope this helps.

You didn't indicate
whether you had a tank. With most tanks, there is a small hand valve at one
end which is designed to get rid of accumulated water in the tank (which
causes rust ). You can also get a filter that is placed on the output air
supply of the compressor. ( should be available at harware or auto supply
stores)

grace,.. with your spraying prblem,.. you can go to any air/hydraulic
distrubutor or granger and purchase an "air line filter" and place it at the end
of your air line at the point just before you couple your hose which feeds your
airbrush,.. this will catch small pieces od debris as well as remove moisture
from the compressed air,.. you could also instal one of these at the compressor
and it will remove the moisture from your air lines themselves,.. most of the
time if you have steel air lines running from the compressor to your gun your
lines will be rusting inside. However the filter at the end of the line will
help to solve your immediate problem....

If your specks could be from the oil in the compressor is you have an air
compressor that runs on oil. I've heard that when using an airbrush it is
best to use an oilless air compressor. Carol @"The HedgeShopper"
