Join us at beautiful Brookgreen Gardens for a weekend of raku led by
Steven Branfman. We will begin with a slide show/reception on the
Friday evening before the workshop. The next day, Steven will
demonstrate his throwing techniques, including his method of using
crushed glass on the outside of pots while continuing to throw them from
the inside. Sunday morning will continue with more demonstrations by
Steven, after which participants will glaze bisqueware brought in from
home. The workshop will finish with participants rakuing their ware in
one of four fiber kilns as well as in a softbrick raku kiln that will
allow for salting during firing.
Brookgreen Gardens is located between the Intracoastal Waterway and the
Atlantic Ocean on the site of four former colonial rice plantations.
Brookgreen Gardens contains the largest outdoor collection of American
figurative sculpture, as well as beautiful formal gardens. This area of
coastal South Carolina is rich in history and natural beauty, and offers
other diversions such as golf, shopping, fishing, crabbing, shrimping,
and of course, wonderful beaches. Plenty of hotels, motels, and
campgrounds are available in the area.
