sticking on handles with darvan

Anyone know why so many people are using Darvan (a deflocculant
used in a similar manner to sodium silicate) instead of slip
to attach handles to leather hard ware? It doesn't really make
sense to me and I wonder about the implications (i.e. on fired
strength). Who started this and why?
