It was nice to see the remnants of a 400 year-old salt-glazed Bellarmine
jug, excavated at Jamestown, VA., in yesterday's _Times_. These jugs, with their
ogre-ish bearded face up on the neck, are said to have been satirical depictions
of Cardinal Bellarmine who, himself rotund as a jug, sought to forbid drinking
in Germany.
Game try, Cardinal. And here's a toast to your image!
