strange cone bending/other stuff.

Tony...I had the same thing happen in my last cone 10 gas kiln fire in my
old studio. The cones do a death scene of Oscar quality. Twisting
backwards and then dying an awful death in the fall. These cones had come
from a new box I had purchased and lucky for me I had some old cones in
that fire as well so nothing was overfired. Wondered what was wrong with
the way I had set them up....and here it was not me at all. Not so glad
that you are having the same problem but glad to hear it was not my
mistake.. ;>}}}. I am NOT using that box of cones again.....

An Aside....MY FIRST GLAZE FIRE in the new kiln is now complete and all
went very well....we will see HOW WELL day after tomorrow. Hope everyone
says a little prayer to the kiln 'god' that all that was sacrificed to the
kiln is going to come out grrreaaat.
As this was my novice fire in electric after 22 yrs. working with gas I
have a question. I soaked the kiln (and I have never soaked a kiln before)
as cone 9 was starting to tip by turning the top 2 burners (see still
talking gas ;.} ) switches down to 7 from 10, high, for 30 mins. Is this
enough or too late? The temp stayed steady, rising only 20 D in 30 mins
and the cones stayed where they were. After 30 mins, I turned the switches
to high again and completed the fire till the ^10's were at 2 o'clock,
pyrometer read 2350, so shut it down. The cones continued to fall to a 5
o'clock position in about 20 mins. Perfect . My pyro. is dead on to the
cones falling.
The fire took 13 hours and 20 mins so went fairly slow????? (16.5 cu ft kiln)
Anyway it has been a busy day and I am too pooped to pop tonight. :>O
I know that the questions will be answered when I open the kiln and see the
results but then that is , what will seem like, forever.
Any input would be really appreciated.
As Always in Clay Peggy

>We are getting strange cone bending in our gas bisque firing.
>The cones curl backward then go down like felled trees. By the
>time they do fall the kill in considerably overfired.
>I know that reducing during bisque can cause this but
>I am positive we are not reducing. Anyone have an idea.
