Dear Jan,

You comment about the difference in stresses on pieces fired in fuel vs
electric caught my eye. I fire in both gas and electric and wonder if you
would elaborate on this statement. I'd like to hear what you have
discovered. Thanks.

Hi Linda,
are you kidding??? I do not have the scientific explanation why the rage
of a fuel fire exposes pots to additional forces, or affects them
differently - but it does. My intuition tells me so, and secondly I have
experienced a difference in how well the same form may become altered in
live fire although made from the same clay body, fired to the same
temperature. Forms like platters with thin bottoms, very large, thin
bowls are much less likely to warp their rims or crack in an electric
firing. The forces of extreme air currents, as well as chemical reactions
within the clay body as it undergoes reduction are absent in the static
controlled environment of an electric kiln. Regards

Less flux is evaporated from the inside of the pot. The outside is exposed
to more gas movement. The inside gets more saturated with vapor.
