strictly functional pottery national

I have just spent another couple of fun days unpacking all the wonderful
pieces that will appear in the fourth annual Strictly Functinal Pottery
National. The show is up and almost ready to go. It looks great, thanks to
two very talented volunteers who selected the appropriate placement of each
and every piece!!! Phyllis Blair Clark will arrive tomorrow to award the
prizes.

The Market House Craft Center is pleased to present this exciting exhibit.
Our BIG news is that it will abe available on the World Wide Web. It SHOULD
be up Monday when the exhibit opens. We are so excited to be able to share
this with all of you. The web address is:
http://www.art-craftpa.com

Our other good news is that the catalog will contain almost all of the
black and white photographs that were submitted to us (there were three
that were so dark the printer could not use them). In 1993 we only had 3
pictures, growing to 20 in 1994, 45 in 1995, and 65 this year (not everyone
sent us the pictures).

Please come to see this exhibit if you can!!
April 29-May 19 are the dates with the Opening Reception on Saturday, May 4
(10am-5pm)
Hours: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 11am-5pm; Sat 10am-5pm and Sun noon-4pm.
Closed Wednesdays.

The SFPN is in Ephrata, PA which is just south of the PA turnpike off exit
21. Go into Ephrata about a mile, turn right on State St (4th signal), to
THE ARTWORKS a block and a half ahead on the left. Easy to get to! And
while you are there allow time to browse the three floors of artist and
craftsman's studios.

I have appreciated all the feedback regarding national competitions,
insurance, fees, etc. and this will all be discussed at our wrap-up meeting
in June. Thank you ALL.

Annuanl Strictly Functional Pottery Show on the Web. I could hardly make
dinner. I had to look at all the pots (mine included). How wonderful to
send your pot to a show and then really be beale to see the show and the
other pots in it even though you arent there. I cant wait to get back to
it. I may even buy one.
Thanks!

Just a reminder that the Strictly Functional Pottery National entry
deadline is February 1st.

The 1996 exhibit is still on-line at http://www.art-craftpa.com
It will remain there until the 1997 exhibit is open.
The application is also printed at that location and can be downloaded.
(It is probably too late to get one sent out to you via snail mail at this
point.)
We have been receiving applications daily, so I guess EVERYBODY doesn't
wait until the last minute!

This year's juror is Val Cushing. Exhibit opens to the public May 3 after a
preview party the night before, and continues through May 25. All the info
is on the website, but if you have questions e-mail me directly.

Jean Lehman on tue 11 mar 97

The Strictly Functional Pottery National has been juried by Val Cushing and
the acceptances and rejections (maybe we should use another word...) have
been mailed and should have been received by now.

There were a record number of applications this year! 410 potters sent in
1095 slides. (Last year we had 288 potters who sent 722 slides.) Val
selected 96 for the exhibition which opens May 3rd in Ephrata, PA, which is
between Lancaster and Reading.

There will be a "Sneak Preview" on Friday Evening, May 2 from 5-8pm. If you
are close enough -- or have your own private jet-- to attend, we will be
happy to put you on the mailing list for the invitations. If you contact me
by Friday, I will put you on the mailing list to receive an invitation.
There is an admission for the preview event. The show itself is open free
of charge. Let me know if you would like for informaton.

I can hardly wait to see the real thing. The slides look GREAT!

Today we unpacked the pots for the 5th Annual SFPN. This is the day I look
forward to every year -- it is so much fun to see the actual pots! After
looking at the slides and the black and white photographs, we THINK we know
what to expect, but are always amazed when we see the REAL pieces. There
are some fabulous pots and the exhibit will be an exciting one. Val Cushing
will be here this week to select the award-winners.

The Market House Craft Center is pleased to present this annual exhibit.
Please come to see it if you can!! It will be open to the public May 3-25.
There is a *Sneak Preview* party the evening before, for those who want
FIRST chance to purchase (but you have to pay to get into that one!).
Hours: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 11am-5pm; Sat 10am-5pm and Sun noon-4pm.
Closed Wednesdays.

If you can't get there in person, the SFPN will again be on the World Wide
Web. It SHOULD be up by Monday, May 5. I will let you know for sure. I
think the 4th Annual show is still online at this time. If you want to
check it out, the web address is:

Wendy,

It is likely AOL. Can't access Ceramics USA on it either, at
least, no images. Try one of the search engines, go through
netscape if you can, works best. Infoseek works well too, I
think.

I just tried it and the SFPN site opens for me, but of course I am not on
AOL, so I don't know the answer to your question. I copied the URL you have
listed, so that is not the problem. The 4th Annual SFPN (from 1996) is
still online for a couple more days... just click on the lovely Jim
Connell vase and you can see all of last year's exhibit. Maybe someone else
on AOL can e-mail you directly (Wendy Hampton ) and tell
you whether/if you can get it.

Well, the 5th Annual SFPN is over, the unsold pieces are packed and on the
UPS truck, our pedestals are back in storage, and the floor is swept clean.

We have one more winner to announce -- the $100 "People's Choice" Award was
won by Cathra-Anne Barker. Runner-ups were Eleanora Eden, Jim Connell,
Adelaide Paul, John Tilton, and Andi Moran. The votes were amaazingly
spread out over 85% of the 95 pieces in the exhibit which shows (at least
according to my non-scientific interpretation) what a really great exhibit
this was -- something for everybody!

We sold a bit over a third of the show (and then sold three more to some of
the packers while we were re-packing to return them!) This was down from
last year but still respectable. We had more visitors than last year, and
more people have seen it on the web this year.

If you missed it --- the exhibit will remain on the web throughout the year!
http://www.art-craftpa.com
To answer a common question -- Yes, we did sell ONE piece through the website.

Juror for the 6th Annual SFPN will be Cynthia Bringle. Postmark deadline
for applications (and slides) will be January 31, 1998. Plan ahead -- make
your entry NOW!!!

If the show will remain on the web site, will you advertize which ones
have sold, and that others can still be purchased from the
owners,through you?
I really think every attempt should be made to sell work in any show. I
worked with The Monarch National for years, and they had a silent
auction every year, and sold a lot of work. The people who show need to
sell. I am not in your show, but I am hoping you will use the web site
to profit those who are in it. Sherry Stewart

Hi, Jean,
Great show! I downloaded all the images and took them to a meeting of The
Clay People, a local group of potters a friend of mine and I started in WA
state.

It's wonderful to see works from all parts of the country and how
'functional' is defined by them. (I saved full-sized images for my
reference files too)

Also, I think it's very useful to see what pieces are selling for.

The fact that the show will be on the web for a whole year is great for the
artists and and show.

Please send me information about the 6th annual as soon as it is available.
I'll promote it in our group.

Thanks
Jeanette Harris in Poulsbo WA

When someone contacts us about a particular artist, we are happy to pass
the contact along. We would have no way of keeping track of which pieces
may still be available now that they have left our hands, but we are
certainly happy to pass contacts along.

The deadline for applications to the Sixth Annual SFPN is almost here...
entries must be mailed by January 31. The application is on the web and can
be downloaded and used. Last year's show may still be seen at:

http://www.art-craftpa.com/sfpn1.html

To refresh your memory, the work must be FUNCTIONAL, and will be juried by
Cynthia Bringle this year. There will be a preview party featuring Cynthia
who will give a slide presentation on May 2. The exhibit opens to the
public on May 3 and closes May 24. The SFPN is open to US residents only.
Up to three pieces may be entered for the $20 entry fee. The size cannot
exceed 30 inches in any dimension, or twenty pounds in weight, and the

shown pieces from people who have never entered an exhibit before, as well
as the seasoned exhibitor.

Thanks, Susan, for the good words. Even better than looking at the the web
site, is seeing, touching and examining the pieces in person. It was a very
successful show this year. Tomorrow is the last day it is open here in
Pennsylvania. It will continue on the web all year until the next one goes
up. We have sold well over half the show.

Warren MacKenzie did a great job of jurying from 1400 slides, which was a
very difficult job. He did have a few words of advice, about entering
exhibitions...

Don't make the currently "in" things, because 500 slides of the current
trend gets old really fast.
Don't be SO influenced by someone else's work that it is hard to tell if it
is theirs or yours.
This is a FUNCTIONAL show... the piece SHOULD be able to function as it
looks like it is supposed to.

I would add...

If you are accepted into the show, send THAT piece, don't substitute
another, but if something happens to the original, call us.

Don't enter a piece that you know is cracked or damaged.

Having said those words, I'll say that most of the pieces in this exhibit
are wonderful. I will miss it when it closes tomorrow!

The deadline is in January, 2000. Make your entries NOW!!!

I will be announcing the juror soon... have to do a final confirmation first.

Let me know if you have questions. I will be available for about a month
and then off line for awhile.

I returned to California last night from the opening of the 8th Annual
STRICTLY FUNCTIONAL POTTERY NATIONAL in Lancaster, PA. Ken Ferguson juried
from slides, and traveled to Lancaster to jury for awards. He did a great
job, it is a really good show! I will post the awards in a day or two when
I get myself unpacked.

We moved the show to the Lancaster Museum of Art, which is a very good
move! The opening was crowded, and successful on Friday evening, April 14,
and many pieces were sold. The show is online at
http://www.art-craftpa.com/sfpn1.html. Check it out!!

I will include Ken Ferguson's Juror's Statement, below.

Ken Ferguson's Juror's Statement

"There are 480 entries. 1347 slides. I have selected 127 pieces. I could
have selected 200 pieces. I was told to limit my selections to 125 (display
constraints). I looked at all of the slides four times. I looked at the
selected pieces eight times.

Functional pottery is alive and well. Maybe as good as ever. The range of
pots: from a 'Brown Betty' to 'Sevres.' The baking dishes are quiet and
simple, bold and complex. Since I make baskets, there were about one
thousand of them submitted. I saw my functional pottery career flash before
my eyes. There are a lot of wood fired pieces. Some incredibly rich and
some very rough. Low temperature - high temperature, salt, porcelain, even
raku. I enjoyed looking at all these pots. I wish there were room for more
pots - and I wish there could be more prize money. I am honored and pleased
to be juror.

I stand behind my selections. I tried to get as many pots as possible into
this show.

As much as I enjoyed jurying this show, I don't feel too good about leaving
some pieces out. It's always like this when jurying a show with slides.

Thank you, Ken Ferguson February, 2000"

People have been asking me to post the names of the people who had work
accepted for this year's Strictly Functional Pottery National. You will see
many ClayArters here... also familiar names, and those who have never been
in a juried exhibition before.

The show is up, and ready for the opening tomorrow night (Friday) from
5-8pm. At 8pm Linda Christianson (juror) will be giving a slide
presentation of her work.

There is still space in the demo workshop with Christianson on Saturday
from 9-4pm. Cost is $50.

She did a terrific job jurying this show! It looks GOOD!!!

If you are in the area, come to the Lancaster Museum of Art at 135 N. Lime
St., Lancaster, PA, USA. Admission is free, and the sfpn will be up through
June 3rd. (Museum Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 am to 4pm; Sunday, noon to 4pm)

Pottery National on Friday, April 6.
Check out last year's exhibition which is still on line at

The new exhibit should be up soon after the opening!

The opening on Friday was great, the food, music and conversation was
outstanding. Linda Christianson gave a very interesting slide presentation.
We had several of the artists show up. People came from New Hampshire,
Washington DC, North Carolina, New York, Minnesota, and several other
states.

The show is on the website at
http://www.art-craftpa.com/sfpn1.html

The workshop yesterday was very nice... what a great demonstrator and
generous person Linda is!

I love being involved with this show. It takes a lot of time and plannng,
but it is SOOOO great when it all comes together. It will be open through
June 3rd, so please visit in person if you can.

Just a reminder that the deadline for applications
for the 10th annual Strictly Functional Pottery
National is January 15, 2002. It is too late to
send for a prospectus now, but the application may
be downloaded from the web site at:

http://www.art-craftpa.com/sfpn.html

Just click on the "Application 2002" at the top of
the page, and you should be able to download.

The juror this year is Jack Troy, who was our very
first juror ten years ago! It will be interesting
to see what changes he finds after ten years.

The show is open only to US residents, much to the
dismay of a few of our Canadian friends. It isn't
because we don't love you all, but shipping is
complicated enough within the 50 states!

If you have questions, please email me privately
and I will be happy to answer.

Jean Lehman, who will be doing the data entry from
San Marcos, California instead of Lancaster,
Pennsylvania!

Happy New Year, everyone...

Just a reminder that the postmark deadline for the 11th Strictly
Functional Pottery National is January 15!

The juror is Wayne Higby, who will select approximately 95 pieces for the show.

April 26 though May 26, 2003
Acceptances go out by March 10 (we have to do it BEFORE NCECA!!)
Accepted work is due in Lancaster, PA between April 12-17.

Up to three pieces may be entered for the $20 entry fee, just one
slide of each piece.

If a piece is accepted, THAT same piece must be the one that is sent
to the show. (Breakage happens, but you would be surprised at that
people call and say "But I sold that piece!" or will just send a
different piece and hope we don't notice.)

Work must be functional!

Work must be for sale and there is a maximum price of $600 per piece.

This exhibition is brought to you by the Market House Craft Center,
which retains 35% of the selling price.

We insure the work while it is in our hands. The artist is
responsible for shipping and insurance to and from the show, which is
in Lancaster, PA.

The requirements and application are on the web site listed below,
and may be downloaded. It is pretty close to the deadline to mail
for an application at this point, but if you want it mailed or faxed,
please email Carol at macclayusa@juno.com or call 717-560-8816.

We always have some ClayArt people in the show!!

If you have questions about the show email me, off the list, please.

I was reading my local potters guild newsletter about the
Strictly Functional Pottery National show. A few local
potters have pots in it. When I searched the archives, I
found Jean Lehman's posts to Clayart last month about the
show but nothing recent. Everyone needs to check out the
online photos:

My depression glass club takes a trip each fall to
Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It's too bad we don't go in the
spring so I could see the pots in person.

I love their WWW site and the work it shows. The photos are very good
and the the information content is an upgrade from last year's version.

This is a great example of the wide variety of things that can be
accomplished by dedicated craft workers. As usual, there are some that
I lust for and others that I would walk on by. So, it is clear to me
that John Glick had a hard time indeed, as his statement confirms. There
were many familiar names listed and as always many that I did not yet kno=
w.

One thing that I find interesting is the fact that there were either
comparatively very few electric firers entered, or that the selection
favored those who fired in salt, soda or wood.

There were only 12 selected entries labeled as fired in electric and
some others labeld "oxidation fired", especially at ^5 of ^6 that
probably are electric, while there were 16 salt fired pieces and 28
that were wood fired. That is surely not representative of the
proportions of use in this list.

I have no way of knowing if this is the usual, common occurance,
representative of John Glick's personal preferences, or just the way it
was this year. However, one way to look at it might be that it is
easier to obtain reputation from this and similar shows if you fire with
salt, soda or use wood for fuel. And, if true, that is a shame because
there is a lot of excellent electric fired work around.

hi jean,
altho i am not stricktly functional at all,
i was wondering about the cost of the entries.
does that mean, that from now on, if one enters
with an 'old fashioned' slide then he will pay
an extra 25 bucks?
think i will be ready to transfer my slides...
hey wayne, now, that you go wireless, you should
go slideless as well!!!

Hi Marta,

I know that when jurying process is digital, slides throws a wrench in
the works. When I was organizing the Cyberclay show for the jurors, my
slide scanner gave up the ghost. I was stuck using a photo service,
which cost and was time consuming as well. I do know that next time, I
will request digital only with very specific requirements in size and
identification of all files (image and artist info).

Digital is wonderful for organizing information, I loved it, once I set
up a system (read: learning curve).

This past SFPN was the first that we took either slides or digital
images, and we were quite surprised that two thirds of the entries
were digital. Poor Malcolm (Davis) had to switch back and forth
between slides and digital images to jury the show -- NOT an easy
task! We didn't have time to get the slides digitalized before he
juried. We want to keep the deadline in January, and that makes the
timing very tight!

This year we decided to "encourage" people to make the switch to
digital, and we made the commitment that we would digitalize any
slides we do get before Linda (Arbuckle) does the jurying. We noticed
that other exhibitions were adding this fee, so we decided that we
would do likewise. Some exhibits aren't even giving that option any
more!
