Dear Clayart Friends,
Here I am again asking more advice questions. My questions this time have
to do with teaching. You see, ultimately my goal is to be able to teach at
a community college and be doing my own work on the side. One of my
questions is what kind of degree do you find to be the most useful and the
most acceptable as far as finding a job teaching? Would you say an MFA or
something like an MAT degree? Second question is this, in the area of North
Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee are there any universities with good
ceramics departments that offer masters degrees? I am very interested in
folk traditions in ceramics having to do with things like salt-firing, jug
pottery, old utilitarian folk styles, and the like. I am just now beginning
my search for a university that will be suitable for my pursuit.
Anyway, I just thought if anyone had any advice to offer, any pearls of
wisdom, any voices of experience, it would be very helpful.
TIA
Sincerely,
Kristine

Kristine -
The MFA is the appropriate terminal degree if you want a teaching job in a
junior college or a university.
We are currently optimistic that we will have an MFA program here at the
Appalachian Center for Crafts in the not-too-distant future, and we strongly
support the perpetuation of folk traditions. But I have no forecast of when
this graduate program might be in place.
I will be very interested to hear other opinions on graduate programs in the
Southeast which might have what you are looking for.
