technical problem - (olsen) gas kiln -- ignition via "match"

updated fri 31 jan 97

Ellen Baker on wed 1 jan 97

We built an Olsen 36 cu. ft. gas kiln last year, and had 17 pretty
successful firings.

Unfortunately, I have never felt that the ignition "match" manifold
works as well as one might.

Has anyone had problems with "the match" sustaining a flame
throughout the length of the manifold sufficient to ingnite all of the
(10) main burners? If you've had problems, or solved them, please
contact me.

We have ideas which may or may not have already been tested.
Thought this would be a good place to compare notes.

Frankly,
All of the larger Olsen kilns that I have fired have problems with the
match. Why Olsen has not solved the problem I don't know. Once the things
are lit they fire O.K. but in general they are very difficult to load. I
am not impressed with them.

Ellen--

My Olsen kiln was outside where unburned gas could not build up and expode,
so I simply ignored the "match" which basically didn't work for me, either.
I just lit the burners individually with a small handheld propane torch.
