terra cotta slip formula

updated fri 28 feb 97

boutique@island.net on sat 8 feb 97

We have been experimenting with terra cotta for some of our bisque
ware. We have had some good effects, but not as consistently as we
would like.

Does anyone have a slip formula, that they could share? To date we
have been using various amounts of Iron Oxide in our regular
earthenware formula, but perhaps there is a better way.

Email me privately if you prefer.

TIA.

This is a warm colored terra cotta casting material to fire
at cone 04-2.

This material casts quickly, needing only 2 or 3 minutes before pouring out
and 5 or 10 before removal from the mold. This is probably due to the use of
Velvacast large-particle-size kaolin (other kaolins could be used but a slower
casting rate would result if they are a smaller particle size).

Fired bars experience a drastic color change somewhere between cone cone 02 and
2, however, I did not have enough bars straddling this range to say where it is
exactly.

See the Magic of Fire book for information on how to properly deflocculate
and mix the slip to a 1.8 specific gravity. This is very important to get
good working properties.
