test firing with one ring of a 321 skutt kiln ???

I have a Skutt 321 (older 1027) that is now working great since ive changed
out the elements. The question I have, is it possible to remove the top
and bottom rings of the 3 part stack to do test firings. I have tried to
see if just the middle ring would work without the top and bottom attached
and it warmed up like normal. It sure would be nice to just have to fire
8" high for testing new glazes instead of a whole kiln load, but is there
any technical problems that may develop at ^6?

I think my AIM 2327 is the same size as your Skutt. It is two ring, with
the top ring 1/2 the size of the bottom ring. I often just bisque in
the bottom ring when I have a small load. It will fire faster than both
rings together, if I let it.

I would try it, but I would use only the middle section, not the top or
bottom. The top and bottom have a different resistance element to compensate
for uneven temperatures at the top or bottom. Also be careful when putting
the kiln back together because the plug and receptacle can become damaged.
The last model 1027 I tried to replace the plug and receptacle on had been
changed by Skutt and they now have a kit that does away with the old plug
receptacle connection.
