thin shelves

Anyone ever seen and know a source (preferably west coast) for kiln shelves
that are on the order of 1/4"-5/16" thick? I saw some but couldn't get the
source. They're a high-tech silicon carbide and they stay mirror flat to
^10 and beyond after 100s of firings. The shelves I saw were 12x24. The
space gained in stacking height and the saving in mass were signifigant but
the real nice thing was how light they were to handle. Pretty cool. Anyone?

The hi tech shelves you are probably refering to are Crystar Shelves,
and the potters I know who use them swear by them, It really doesn't
matter who you buy them from since most suppliers will have them drop
shipped from the maker.. Axner 800-843-7057 has a supply cat. that lists
these shelves, 12 x 24 x 5/16 are $129 each.

Dean: You are asking about thin, lighweight silicon carbide shelves.
There is such a shelf, a specially bonded silicon carbide put out by
Norton. The 12X24 weigh 9 lbs as compared to 20 lbs for a 1 " thick
Thorley Mullite or 29 lbs for a silcon carbide. We had a group buy
several years ago at $90 per. The price has gone out of sight, but
that is a long story. Your best contact is Dona Turbes at Firebrick
Supply in St. Paul MN. Phone: (612) 646-1311. She is also planning a
group buy on Advancers. Ask her about that. RS
