thread on various make-do studios

I really enjoyed all this talk about dealing with less than admirable
working scenes, since I've been ther but my "her" is a truly pleasant
studio...
I started in a wet basement wearing boots in 2 inches of water and
working by an unshaded basement bulb...After about a year, I'd had it and
moved upstairs , to a small room next to the dining room..no water, a
clay track via kitchen to unattached garage where my first kiln was...How
true the conflict between clayey feet and a ringing telephone...From
there to an unheated barn without water while my house was being built...
There's still clay dust all over my house because I am not neat but the
good news is that the pots reflect the potter, not the studio.

All, We too have lived under very poor studio conditions and would deeply
advise anyone working in their house, including their celler,to purchase a
large furnace exhaust blower. These can be picked-up for less than
$100.00.(Oursa cost $45.00) These blowers are so powerful that they will
make doors slightly difficult to open...and slam shut. Added to all the
other hazards of daily living, silica particles do no good at all. Whether
low-to-the ground pets, children or adults, clay is always a danger.
Presumably one expects to be a potter for more than a year-or-two. don& isao.

Do not use such a powerful fan if there are any gas burning appliances such
as water heaters or furnaces in the area. The strong vacuum from such a
fan can pull the carbon monoxide that would normally rise up the flue into
the room.
