This is a classic "folk tale" that just isn't so. There are lots of ways to
change and mimic the ring of vitrified ware without high fire. Conversely,
many things that are fired well above ^10 do not ring. Try IFB, for instance.

I never thought about IFB being fired in the manufacture. I've always
thought of it as blocks of material "cut" from larger blocks of
"diatomaceous earth" material. I've never seen any material regarding its
manufacture that I can remember. I'd be interested to hear a description
of the process.
